Express AM5 is a commercial communications satellite owned by the Russian Satellite Communications Company in the Express range of satellites .
It was on December 26, 2013 at 14:49 UTC with a Proton-M / Briz-M - carrier rocket from the rocket launch site Baikonur placed in a orbit. 9 hours and 22 minutes after takeoff, the satellite entered a geostationary transfer orbit . From here it should reach its final geostationary position with the help of electric thrusters . This is the first time for a satellite built in Russia that this maneuver is carried out using an electric propulsion system. The main contractor for the construction of the satellite is the Russian space company ISS Reshetnyov , based in Zheleznogorsk, northeast of Krasnoyarsk . Its construction was decided on October 22, 2005 and on August 12, 2009 RSCC ordered the satellite near Reshetnev. Concrete design work began on October 27, 2009, a preliminary construction draft was available on June 1, 2010 and on May 22, 2011 Reshetnjow announced that the basic structure of the payload module had been completed and that communication technology was being installed at MacDonald Dettwiler in Canada, which the Deliver transponders and antennas. On August 24, 2012, MDA returned the payload module and then a total of ten antennas for the satellite. The final tests were completed in October 2013.
The three-axis stabilized satellite with 30 C-band -, 12 Ka-band -, 40 Ku-band - and two L-band - transponders equipped and intended to enable the position 140 degrees East mobile communication links for the Government of Russia and the country's president , provide digital video, telephone and data services for Russian territories, broadcast digital radio and television programs and implement VSAT network connections. It was built by Reshetnjow on the basis of the new Express 2000 satellite bus and has a planned service life of 15 years.
