Färnigen is a hamlet in the Meiental in the municipality of Wassen in the canton of Uri in Switzerland .

location

The hamlet is about 50 meters below the Sustenpassstrasse at 1,455  m above sea level. M. in the rear Meiental. The surrounding mountains are among the Urner Alps , where the striking Fünffingerstöck massif with the 3023  m above sea level. M. high Wendenhorn is the highest mountain formation visible from Färnigen. While the valley side north of the Meienreuss is characterized by agricultural cleared areas and subalpine mountain forest, the south side of the valley has loose forest cover. The numerous waterfalls on the south side are fed by the Rütifirn, which is not visible from Färnigen . The southern side of the valley is not accessible by hiking trails, while on the north side the Seewenalp with a mountain lake and the Seewenalphütte are destinations for medium-difficulty mountain tours. Due to its protected location, Färnigen is hardly affected by the sometimes strong windward and leeward winds of the Urner Reuss Valley .

Townscape

The old pass path and the old Sustenstrasse from 1811 with their preserved cobblestones on the village square lead through the around 20 buildings in Färnigen . The new Sustenstrasse from 1946 bypasses Färnigen to the north.

Färnigen has a closed townscape as a dense collection of wooden houses and wood-clad stone buildings of agricultural character. The Hotel Edelweiss and the St. Johann Nepomuk Chapel stand out from the townscape as plastered stone buildings . The latter forms a gate-like border of the passage to the west with the massive mortar quarry stone wall opposite (popularly known as the “Heidenmauer”), on which the so-called Gabrielihaus is only ajar as a wooden structure.

Chapel of St. Johann Nepomuk

The chapel was rebuilt in 1794 after a devastating fire in the village, but it should have had a previous building. It consists of a nave , a retracted rectangular choir and a small bell yoke with an onion helmet . The interior is barrel vaulted and decorated with two frescoed ceilings and subtle stucco over the windows. The figures of saints, the Way of the Cross and the two colored glass windows in the choir ( Christ and Mary ) date from the 19th century. On the other hand, the late Baroque high altar created by Lukas Regli dates from the construction time of the chapel . The reredos is two-story and has turned columns typical of the region. The central figure depicts the patron saint Johannes Nepomuk , who is venerated as the protector of travelers, especially when crossing rivers, with a palm branch as a sign of martyrdom. The four altar figures were made in Tyrol in the 19th century and replace the original figures.

Trivia

Färnigen was one of the filming locations for the 1979 film The Frozen Heart by Xavier Koller .
