He studied engineering and law at Princeton University until 1966 ( BA ) and from 1969 to 1970 as a postgraduate course in economics at Stockholm University with a focus on "international economic relations". He worked as a business journalist with a focus on oil, energy and economic policy. He also published in the left-wing weekly newspaper " Freitag " , in the Swiss periodical " Zeit -fragen " of the association for the promotion of psychological knowledge of human nature , and earlier also in the weekly magazine " Neue Solidarität " of the civil rights movement Solidarity (BüSo). In the meantime, Engdahl has turned away from BüSo and has not published on Zeit -fragen since 2006 . He has been married to Ingeborg Rasche since 1987 and lives in Germany. theses

In his articles and non-fiction books, he has delved into geopolitical and politico-economic topics, from the role of the global oil and energy industries to the dollar and global agriculture. Engdahls With the oil weapon to world power tells the story of petroleum, which after Engdahl became the weapon for world domination . Engdahl claims that the 1973 oil crisis was systematically prepared as part of the Bilderberg Conference in Saltsjöbaden . The founding of the Greens goes back to an attempt by the energy industry to combat the nuclear power competition that emerged in the 1950s . With the reference to further oil deposits of allegedly abiotic origin , Engdahl considers an imminent maximum production of oil reserves, as advocated by the proponents of the peak oil theory, to be unlikely and therefore economically motivated.

In a monograph from 2006, Engdahl accuses the companies Monsanto , Syngenta , Dow Chemical , DuPont and the Rockefeller Foundation of wanting to gain long-term control over the food market with genetically modified seeds with their commitment to green genetic engineering .
