Lists on the subject

The FN SCAR ( F abrique N ational S pecial Operations Forces C ombat A ssault R IFLE) is a multi-caliber rifle the Belgian manufacturer FN Herstal . It is used by the US Special Operations Forces and the US Rangers , among others . The final tests and developments took place in mid-2006, and from April 2009 the SCAR was assigned to US Army units. The procurement of the MK16 within the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) was discontinued in 2010. Remaining specimens were retired until 2013. To compensate, conversion kits to caliber 5.56 mm for the MK 17 were ordered.

technology

On October 15, 2003, the USSOCOM launched a tender for a new assault rifle . The main focus should be on the ability to fire different types of ammunition, including:

The weapon should offer the possibility of firing other ammunition after it has been converted in the field. The SCAR MK 16 (formerly SCAR-L ) should be convertible to the caliber 6.8 × 43 mm SPC and the SCAR MK 17 ( SCAR-H ) to 7.62 × 39 mm. This was intended to give the soldiers with the MK 17 the opportunity to use captured AK-47 magazines . However, FN does not currently offer any conversion kits for these calibres; The main selling point is now the possibility of being able to use a large part of the parts of the MK 16 in the MK 17 and vice versa.

The lightweight variant MK 16 (see picture) uses the standard magazines of the M16 ( STANAG magazine ) in caliber 5.56 × 45 mm , while the MK 17 uses FN-FAL magazines. To reduce weight, the rifle body is mainly made of polymers , partly also of extruded aluminum . For each variant there are different lengths of barrel that can be quickly exchanged. The shoulder rest can be pulled out so that it can be adapted to the individual needs of the shooter, and it can be folded in, which enables high mobility in house- to- house combat . It also has a height-adjustable cheek rest. Picatinny rails (MIL-STD 1913) are located above, below and on the sides. Below the barrel of specially manufactured for the SCAR can MK-13 - grenade launcher in caliber mm × 46 40 to be mounted. Available fire modes are single shot and, for military variants, bursts of fire (continuous fire).
