The Faber Courtial GbR is on virtual reality , historical reconstructions and visual effects company specializing. It was founded in 1998 by Maria and Jörg Courtial in Darmstadt .

Field of activity

The company is active in the field of VR , film, VFX , animation and post-production for top-class VR films, TV productions, documentaries, exhibitions and image films. The production of high quality VR films has been a special focus of the company since 2014. Faber Courtial and ZDF produced the very first fully immersive VR documentary for German television: the award-winning production "Vulkane VR". In 2016, the second VR production for ZDF Terra X with the title Gladiators in the Colosseum followed . In 2017 the VR-Zeitreise Kölner Dom was created , which was produced as part of the WDR project "The Cologne Cathedral in 360 degrees and VR" and was awarded the Grimme Online Award 2017. Since then, the company has been one of the VR pioneers on the German market and is one of the premium providers of virtual reality content internationally.

With the VR documentary "2nd Step: From Moon to Mars and Beyond" (German title: Reise zu Mond und Mars), which was commissioned by ZDF to accompany a 3-part Terra X documentary about Alexander Gerst's deployment on the ISS was produced, the company continued its success story in the field of VR film. The production has been shown at numerous international film festivals and has been awarded prestigious VR prizes, including a. with the "People Choice Award for Best Passive Experience" at the "Festival of International Virtual & Augmented Reality Stories" (FIVARS) in Toronto / Canada (2019) and as "Best 360 Film (Best Panorama Video)" at the World Conference on VR in Nanchang / China (2019).

Since 2018, Faber Courtial has also been producing its own VR film content completely independently. With the support of Deutsche Telekom, the 3-part VR series "Follow Me - Rome" was created, which takes the viewer on a VR journey to the most important places in ancient Rome. In 2019 the VR film "1st Step" (Eng. Title: Apollo) followed, which has the Apollo missions as its content.

In addition to VR films, the company's other specialty areas also include the (photo-realistic) reconstruction of historical buildings, landscapes and artifacts in collaboration with historians and archaeologists, 3D animated maps, 3D stereo productions and purely virtual films with real actors, such as re-enactment -Groups or actors. In an animation for the Time Travel Vienna adventure museum, z. B. the actresses Vicky Krieps as Sissi and Rita Winkelmann as Archduchess Maria Theresia .

Due to its top-class animations, which convince with their unmistakable style and high artistic quality, Faber Courtial is now also one of the premium providers in the field of film / documentation. The first well-known productions included, for example, “The Germans” I & II, “Universum der Ozeane” with Frank Schätzing (Group 5 film production 2008 & 2010) or “Unterwegs in der Weltgeschichte” with Hape Kerkeling (Interscience Film 2011). The ZDF Terra X documentary "Aufbruch ins All mit Alexander Gerst" (2018), the ZDF documentary "Hannibal - March on Rome" (2018) and the big "Europa-Saga" from 2017 are mentioned very recently ZDF and arte were produced. Due to the long list of projects that have been implemented over the course of the company's 20-year history, the company now has an enormously extensive set archive which, in addition to the most precise anatomical and geological assets, also includes reconstructions of almost all epochs and cultures.

In addition to the major German TV channels, Faber Courtial also counts numerous museums among its customers, including the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim, the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart and the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer. For the Limeseum Ruffenhofen archaeological museum, which opened in 2012, Faber Courtial developed, among other things, an augmented reality app .

history

Faber Courtial was founded in 1998 by Maria and Jörg Courtial, who both studied industrial design in Darmstadt. Until 2004, the company was primarily active in the field of image film and product advertising. a. for Fraport, McDonald's, Neff GmbH and Airbus. The work was awarded at various festivals. In 2005, the documentary "The Mongols" was the first major television production. Since then, the focus has been on creating high-quality animations, matte paintings , set extensions, compositings and crowd replications for television documentaries (ARD, ZDF, arte, SWR and many more) as well as exhibitions. Several VFX , CGI and compositing specialists and an archaeologist are currently working at the company's headquarters as well as various freelance designers and scientists for Faber Courtial. The company has been active in the field of "VR film" since 2014; From 2018, for the first time, with completely in-house VR productions.
