Company history

In 1877 master locksmith Carl Andreas Neff founded the company in the homestead of what was then the Zähringer Hof with six journeymen as a craft business . Coal stoves and a little later bakery and charcoal ovens were manufactured under the name “Carl Neff stove and oven factory ”. In 1910 the production facility already had 40 employees, in 1931 there were now 100 employees. After the Second World War, 60% of the plant was destroyed, and the new start took place with initially seven employees. In 1950 the construction of a second plant in the Ruiter Tal (Bretten) began. In 1953, the plant in Bruchsal with 300 employees built equipment for large kitchens . In 1961 Neff became Europe's largest electric stove manufacturer and at that time employed around 2,500 people at four production sites: two plants in Bretten and one each in Bruchsal, Rinklingen and Ittlingen ( foundries ). In 1964, Neff products were sold in almost 50 countries around the world. Neff was already the largest manufacturer of electric, coal and oil stoves in Germany - increasingly also in Europe. In 1967 Neff celebrated its 90th anniversary with around 4,400 employees who produced around 500,000 devices a year.

In 1969 Neff was on the verge of bankruptcy: it had taken over with the purchase of the rival company Junker & Ruh. Neff became a subsidiary of AEG , and in 1972 a new upswing became apparent: a new production facility and high-bay warehouse were completed, and stove production was further increased. In 1981 a new painting and phosphating plant was put into operation.

On August 17, 1982, Carl Neff GmbH had to register as a subsidiary of AEG Liquidationsvergleich . The state government in Baden-Württemberg provided the company with DM 10 million to enable production to be resumed. On October 1, 1982, the company went bankrupt after the minimum comparison rate of 35% could not be met. Then Bosch and Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH, today BSH Hausgeräte GmbH, took over the Neff brand and founded Neff GmbH, Munich. The factory locations were expanded to include the plant in Bretten. In 1986/87 the flat screen hood production began , an electrostatic dip enamelling and powder system were installed. In 1992, group work in the stove assembly was introduced at Neff . In 1993 the groundbreaking for the construction of a two-story assembly hall took place , on June 25th the ten millionth Neff stove was produced. In 1997 Neff started producing extractor hoods , and in 1999 the production was expanded. Over 500,000 stoves and around 500,000 extractor hoods are currently manufactured at the BSH site in Bretten. The competence center for steam technology is also located in Bretten.
