Under the title Die Wittelsbacher am Rhein. The Electoral Palatinate and Europe took place from September 8, 2013 to March 2, 2014 in the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums and in Mannheim Palace, a transnational exhibition dedicated to the European ruling family of the Wittelsbachers and which had 111,281 visitors. The exhibition showed 600 years of cultural history of the region on the Rhine and Neckar , which shaped the dynasty as Count Palatine of the Rhine , as electors , kings and emperors from the Middle Ages to modern times .

The exhibition recalled that 800 years ago , Count Palatine Ludwig der Kelheim was awarded the Palatinate Countess near the Rhine by Staufer Friedrich II . The Wittelsbachers ruled the electorate on the Rhine without interruption for 600 years .

Honorary degrees and patrons

The exhibition project bore the honorary title of an "Exhibition of the states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse". After the exhibition The Staufer and Italy, it was the second history show that the three federal states are presenting together. The patronage was shared by the Prime Ministers of Baden-Württemberg ( Winfried Kretschmann ), Rhineland-Palatinate ( Malu Dreyer ), and Hesse ( Volker Bouffier ). HRH Duke Franz von Bayern had given the exhibition his patronage .

Wittelsbach Year 2013

Accompanying the Mannheim Wittelsbacher exhibition, 44 southern German cities celebrated the Wittelsbach year 2013 together. The participating locations included the cathedral city of Speyer , Hardenburg near Bad Dürkheim , Guttenberg Castle near Neckarmühlbach , the cities of Alzey , Heidelberg , Kaiserslautern , Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Lauterecken and Zweibrücken . Special exhibitions, concerts, theatrical productions, medieval festivals, readings, lecture series, guided tours and activities were organized. On the occasion of the Wittelsbach Year, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer showed the exhibition Kingdom of the Palatinate , which was dedicated to the work of the Bavarian kings in the Palatinate in the 19th century. The Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg showed an exhibition accompanying the tombs of the Wittelsbach family. Erbach Castle in the Odenwald presented the history of the Erbach taverns. The Wittelsbach Year was coordinated by the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in coordination with the administration of the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg, the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate and the administration of the State Palaces and Gardens of Hesse .
