Facelift is an Austrian alternative rock band from Graz , which was founded in the late 1990s by Peter Domainko, Andrea Orso and Clemens Berger. At the end of the 1990s, Facelift were considered one of the most promising bands in Austria.

history

Facelift in original line-up (1997)

In the early days, Andreas Suppan and Gerald Muskatel were also members of the group. They left the band after only a short time, and Facelift performed as a trio for a few years. The reason for the separation were musical differences. Little by little Andrea Orso took over the front vocals after Clemens Berger had taken over the lead vocals in the early days. Along with this, the style of the band also changed increasingly. Was still the first album the band She much under the influence of hardcore, grunge and crossover, the style changed more and more towards pop and indie rock.

After founding member, Peter Domainko, withdrew from the group, Helge Murgg and Norbert Wallner joined the band in 2000. In this formation two more successful studio albums were recorded and released. Peter Domaniko then joined "Sugar for Lucy" as a drummer for several years. Then he took over the position of bassist and later again the place as drummer at "Beggars street inn". There were repeated conversations about the return to facelift, but in the end they have not come true to this day.

Over the years the band has developed into a frequent guest on numerous radio stations ( FM4 , Soundportal or Ö3 ) and video channels ( GoTV , OKOTO, VIVA , Freiraum.TV or ORF ).

In 2004 singer Andrea Orso and guitarist Clemens Berger separated after a relationship lasting more than 10 years during the tour for CD Pictures , which was released in 2003 . A breakup of the band was never on the agenda. The next release followed in 2005 with Impossible somethings .

In 2007, Facelift became part of the largest documentary on the Austrian music scene in the last 50 years. Under the title World Famous in Austria - 50 Years of Austropop , Rudi Dolezal produced a 10-part series for ORF. Facelifts were seen in parts 7, 8 in 2007 and were also seen in part 9 in 2008 and in great detail in season 10. The production was broadcast by ORF and 3sat .

Since the debut album She (1998), the band has continued to develop and consistently pursues their own style, which they call "Alternative-Hard / Heart-Pop".

In addition to their four studio albums to date, hundreds of live concerts have been performed - including on club tours across Europe and the USA. Facelifts could also be seen at the Bizarre Festival , the Danube Island Festival , the Nova Rock Festival and the Forestglade Festival.

In 1998 the German music magazine Visions chose the group as one of the “upcoming” alternative acts on the scene. In 2000, a German jury awarded the Facelift award for the best alternative newcomer band of the year. In 2004 the album Pictures was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the category "Alternative FM4". At the beginning of 2007 the band received the "Austrian Music Award".

The band has been working with Ewald Pfleger ( Opus ) publisher “Skyland Songs” for years . The penultimate album Impossible Somethings (2006) was produced by noise legend Guido Lucas ( Blackmail , Harmful , Scumbucket , Thomas D. etc.).

Jürgen Kulmer becomes the new drummer and Matthias Predota becomes a permanent member of the formation in the studio and live. In autumn 2008 Facelift produced their fourth studio album together with Guido Lucas. In April 2009, Facelift's fourth CD was released with 14 tracks in Austria, Germany, France and Switzerland. The band toured extensively throughout Austria and Germany. Numerous European radio and TV stations play songs from the current album.

In 2009 the band won the "Rockin 'Movie Award" in bronze for the video clip Don't worry about ...

In 2009 the band shot interviews and contributions for the new ORF production (Rudi Dolezal) about Woodstock and what remained of it. In March 2010, the German label Specter (Universal) re-released the debut album She from 1998. The original release from the 1990s had been out of print for years. A video for the opener (Breaking Glass) was produced especially for the re-release.

The recordings for the new album were completed in 2011. The production was again with Gudio Lucas (BluNoise), who was also involved in the two previous albums. The title of the CD released in April 2012 is Whom do you see? . Thematically it is largely about the death of the mother of the guitarist Clemens Berger and the birth of the singer Andrea Orso's daughter Ylvie.

Just before Christmas 2014, Facelift recorded a new album with 10 tracks. The Falling Trees album was released in April 2015 on Pate Records / Rough Trade. A small tour through Austria and Germany followed. After that it became quieter around the band and guitarist Clemens Berger and drummer Norbert Wallner devoted more to their side projects "Clutch of Clones", "Guido Maria Berger" and "Tuesday Microgrooves". With "Guido Maria Berger" and "Clutch of clones" he went into the studio and recorded some new songs. Numerous musicians from the band's environment such as Peter Domainko, Norbert Wallner, Jürgen Kulmer and Andrea Orso support him in the studio. Originally, Guido Lucas was supposed to be the producer, but he died unexpectedly in September 2017. While "Clutch of Clones" broke up after only one recording, "Guido Maria Berger" developed more and more into a live act.

Founding member Gerald Muskatel dies on September 9, 2019 after a long illness.

Whether Facelift will go to the studio again for her 25th birthday in 2020 or get more active live is not still uncertain, as front woman Andrea Orso feels little desire for further activities. In any case, a new single will be released on January 31, 2020 on their parent label (Pate Records) with the title "I am falling Tonight". This can be read on the band's website. The track was produced by Heinz Wallner and Andrea Orso-Hödl. A separate clip for the track was also shot.
