The Falkenstein is a passenger ferry the HADAG AG . It operates as a port ferry within the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund in the port of Hamburg . The ship was named after the Falkenstein Forest Park in the Hamburg district of Blankenese .

General data

The ship was built in 1992 at the Heinrich-Grube-Werft, since 2001 SSB Spezialschiffbau Oortkaten , in Hamburg-Ochsenwerder . The Falkenstein is one of six newly built one-man ships that are manned by only one master and that were put into service by HADAG between 1989 and 1993. Her sister ship, the Wolfgang Borchert , was extensively rebuilt in 2007; the entire aft saloon has been rebuilt and access to the open deck is now amidships via a staircase on each side instead of a single staircase at the stern previously. In addition, the Borchert got widened access ramps.

At the beginning of 2010 the Falkenstein was also rebuilt in the same way. To improve maneuverability in windy conditions, a second machine, a plate-shaped pump jet , was installed.

The Falkenstein is the second HADAG ship to bear this name. From 1955 to 1977 a type II R ferry was already sailing under this name. Within the shipping company, the ship was initially referred to as the “Frankenstein” because its design differed significantly and unfavorably from that of the four other modern HADAG ferries.

Technical specifications

The Falkenstein is 27.24 meters long, 6.55 meters wide and has a maximum draft of 1.52 meters. It can carry up to 210 passengers.

The ship has been painted yellow since 2001 and carries advertising for the musical " The Lion King ". The original color of the ship was white with a green rubbing strip and a green stripe across the window band. It has a continuous, closed passenger compartment on the main and foredeck . At the stern is a small open deck with a staircase to the upper deck. Behind the foredeck is the boarding area with a hydraulically operated ramp each on port and starboard , above which the wheelhouse is located . The modifications that were carried out are limited to the wheelhouse, which received retracted windows, and the expansion of a separating door between the fore and main deck. The wheelhouse windows were initially drawn back at an angle.

The Falkenstein is equipped with a marine diesel engine with an output of 550 kilowatts. The motor drives a Lips nozzle, which works on the principle of a Kort nozzle, via a gearbox . The Lips nozzle, the use of which led to energy savings of 16.9 percent, was retrofitted in 2000. With the ship propulsion a speed of 11  knots is reached. There is a transverse thruster amidships .

The ship was equipped with electronic destination displays on the sides in 2003 . In 2005 an Elna FIS river information system was upgraded. The new navigation system consists of an Elna River Radar 4007 / 9TFT and an Inland ECDIS Radar Pilot 720. It combines the radar image and the turning indicator and sets its own position, that of other vehicles with direction and speed, as well as standing obstacles DGPS - supported on an electronic Elbe map to the meter. The investment costs for the system were around 35,000 euros.

Ferry service

The Falkenstein and Borchert operate on all port ferry lines with the exception of the Hamburg-Blankenese- Este -Linie (HBEL). The mast can be folded down for a safe drive under the Argentina Bridge (line 73) in Steinwerder . However, the time window in which the tidal water level prevents passage under the bridge is larger than that for the shallower water taxis . The hydraulic ramps prevent mooring at the Neuenfelde and Cranz piers , as there are no pontoons there, but stairs and platforms at different heights. The main ship on the HBEL is therefore the Altona .
