Fantasy bra
The presentation of the Fantasy Bra , a jeweled bra , was the highlight of the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show of the US underwear brand Victoria’s Secret . The Fantasy Bra was last presented in 2018. After that the show was discontinued.
history
Since 1996, Victoria's Secret has entrusted a well-known jeweler or jewelry designer with the design of the Fantasy Bra. The bra was initially only offered in the Victoria's Secret catalog, but has been part of the fashion shows since 2001 and regularly formed the centerpiece of the presentation on these. Each year, a model was selected from among the models at the fashion show, the Victoria's Secret Angels , who was allowed to wear the Fantasy Bra.
Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima wore the Fantasy Bra at three fashion shows. Gisele Bündchen , Tyra Banks , Karolína Kurková and Alessandra Ambrosio each wore the Fantasy Bra in two shows. The $ 15 million fantasy bra from 2000, worn by Gisele Bündchen, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive lingerie item ever created.
Luxury accessories and slow moving goods
The Fantasy Bra was touted by Victoria's Secret as the “ultimate Christmas present” and was regularly offered for sale in the catalog. However, only the copies from 2004 and 2012 have been sold since the first edition in 1996. Although the Fantasy Bras are de facto slow-moving, they fulfilled important functions for the brand. In the catalog, the million dollar showpiece formed the upper end of the price scale and thus shifted the price frame of reference upwards for the customer: In comparison, a bra for 100 dollars suddenly appeared extremely cheap. In the first few years this effect was intensified by the fact that the Fantasy Bras became more expensive from year to year until a purchase price of 15 million dollars was reached in 2000. Since then - the Fantasy Bra was now firmly established as an everyday cultural event - prices fell again, to 2 million dollars in 2010. Victoria's Secret never suffered a loss, because the jewels could easily be reused.
In addition to the Fantasy Bras, Victoria's Secret has also released other exclusive Fantasy Gifts , such as luxurious adventure safaris. All of these fantasy gifts were immeasurably expensive and luxurious, and thus ultimately unaffordable for customers. Although the Fantasy Gifts were offered for sale, they were not primarily aimed at sales, but expanded the fantasy world of the Victoria's Secret brand by an imaginary space to dizzying heights. The brand consciously plays with the limit of good taste and the fascination with the absurd.
In feminist literature it is criticized that the fantasy bra models were less aimed at potential buyers than constructed a fantasy world for heterosexual men in which scantily clad women advertise themselves as consumer goods. The Fantasy Bra represents itself as a link between two symbols of male power: taking possession of female sexuality and wealth. Diamond-studded engagement rings are a comparable form of expression of this symbolism of power.
Single Fantasy Bras
Fantasy Bra 2010 ("The Bombshell")
The Fantasy Bra 2010 was entitled "The Bombshell" (literally grenade, the term Bombshell Girl refers to a kind of pin-up ). The design for the cognac-colored bra comes from the jewelery manufacturer Damiani , which also designed the Fantasy Bra in 2009. 2355 white and cognac-colored diamonds in a harlequin pattern are arranged on a fine gold net on the cups, which are shaped with brackets. Both cups are connected by crossed diamond-studded ribbons, which also adorn the straps of the bra, in the middle is a heart-shaped 16-carat diamond. The production of the 60 carat diamond, 82 carat blue sapphire and blue topaz heavy model required 1500 hours of work by 6 jewelers. The Bombshell Fantasy Bra was presented in the catalog and at the annual fashion show by the model Adriana Lima and cost 2 million dollars, which was a rather affordable price compared to the Fantasy Bras presented in previous years.
Fantasy Bra 2011 ("Treasure")
The 2011 Fantasy Bra, titled "Treasure", was designed by the New York jeweler London Jewelers . In more than 500 hours of work, almost 3,400 pearls and precious stones, including white and yellow diamonds , citrines and aquamarines , were set in 18-carat yellow and white gold and worked into the light turquoise push-up brassiere . It is a model with metal brackets, with the cups tapering into two prongs at the top. The edges of the cups and the straps are set with rows of white pearls, the cups are also embroidered with a floral pattern made of pearls and precious stones. There is a yellow diamond each at the base of the carrier. The pendant in the middle of the bra is set with two large white (8 carat) and yellow (14 carat) diamonds arranged one below the other and ends in a tassel made of pearl and gemstone strings in white and light turquoise. Two more strings of pearls run below the actual bra from the middle to the closure on the back. The back of the bra is otherwise not decorated. All the diamonds processed add up to over 142 carats . On the show, the 2011 Fantasy Bra, which has a price tag of $ 2.5 million, was worn by Australian model Miranda Kerr .
