Here he learned to play football in the youth departments of various amateur clubs such as SV Heerlerhei, Swift Roermond and SV Heerlen until he switched to Roda Kerkrade's youth . In 1998 he was accepted into the professional squad of the then first division team, but only trained for two years. He made his professional debut on November 5, 2000 during a league game against Feyenoord Rotterdam . By the end of the season he was used in two more league games and finished fourth with his team. In the next season Sonkaya conquered a regular place right at the beginning of the season, completed 28 league games and ended the season with his team in 7th place in the table. They also made it to the round of 16 in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup , where they failed unlucky at AC Milan . Sonkaya played in almost all UEFA Cup games and contributed one goal. The following season he kept his regular place and rose to the Turkish national player. He took part in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup with the Turkish national team and finished third with his team.

After Sonkaya had established himself in the national team, the already existing interest of the Turkish clubs in him increased. In the summer of 2004 he was associated with Galatasaray Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul . After the former decided against a commitment Sonkaya, Beşiktaş committed the defensive talent for a transfer fee of three million US dollars. At his new club he did not find his way into the team until October 2004 and was consistently used in the team by coach Vicente del Bosque until the winter break. In the second half of the season, the club's management replaced coach del Bosque with the club's own legendary Rıza Çalımbay . This new coach completely renounced the services of Sonkaya, did not let him play until the end of the season and then put him on the list of players who should leave the club at the end of the season.

The Portuguese football club FC Porto , which had already observed Sonkaya when he was at Roda Kerkrade, expressed an interest in Sonkaya and began to negotiate with Beşiktaş. The clubs came to an agreement, so that Sonkaya moved to FC Porto in the summer of 2005 for a transfer fee of 500,000 euros. Sonkaya's breakthrough also failed at FC Porto. Although he was Portuguese football champion and Portuguese Supercup winner with his team in his first season , he only appeared in five league games. For the 2006/07 season he was loaned to the league competitor Académica de Coimbra and one season further to his old club Roda Kerkrade .

In the summer of 2008 Sonkaya moved including transfer to the Azerbaijani club FK Khazar Lenkoran . Here he only played one season and then moved to the Turkish TFF 1st Lig to Kayseri Erciyesspor .

In 2011 he moved to the North Cypriot club Çetinkaya TSK . In March 2012 Sonkaya took part privately in an indoor soccer tournament and at the end of the tournament got into a mass unrest. The Royal Dutch Football Association blamed Sonkaya and two other friends for the unrest. Sonkaya was then given a lifelong game suspension.

At the end of his career, Sonkaya played for the district league team SuS Herzogenrath from 2014 to 2018 and since 2018/19 for the district league team Kohlscheider BC , both based in the Aachen city region.
