The Fehmarnbelt is a German lightship that is no longer in position as such, but is still in service today as a museum ship .

history

The ship was from 1906 to 1908 on the Thyen shipyard in Brake on the Weser as a three-masted schooner built with Notbesegelung and as 1908 Lightship outside Eider put into service. With interruptions until 1944 it was on the Outer Eider position in front of the confluence of the Eider in the North Sea , and from 1914 to 1916 on the Süderpiep position . In 1918/19 it was involved in military operations in the Baltic Sea . In 1931 an engine was installed. From 1945 to 1948 it was used as a guard ship on Minenzwangsweg P 11-P 15 in the German Bight . From 1949 to 1953 it was a replacement lightship for the Amrumbank position (P 15). In 1954 and 1956 there were various modifications. The beacon was strengthened, a radio beacon was retrofitted. In the years from 1956 to 1965 it was used as Reserve Holtenau (reserve fire ship) on positions in Flensburg, Kiel and Fehmarnbelt, in 1961 for a short time on Elbe 1 and then from 1965 to 1984 under its current name on position in Fehmarnbelt . On March 31, 1984, it was the last German lightship on the Baltic Sea to be decommissioned; the position was taken over by an unmanned large barrel .

In the same year, the ship served as the Hatteras film ship for shooting the US feature film The Lightship (based on the story Das Feuerschiff by Siegfried Lenz ) on Sylt . It has been a museum ship since 1986.

Today the ship belongs to the non-profit association Feuerschiff für Lübeck eV and has been on the Behnkai in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in winter since autumn 2009 in front of the Media Docks on the northern Wall peninsula . It is kept in good working order and has been making trips in the summer since 1989 to test all facilities under sea conditions; Visits on board are also possible.
