Felix Eberty

Georg Friedrich Felix Eberty (born January 26, 1812 in Berlin ; † July 7, 1884 in Arnsdorf , Lower Silesia ) was a German lawyer , amateur astronomer and writer .

Life

Eberty comes from the Jewish Ephraim family in Berlin. He was born as the son of the banker Hermann Eberty (1784-1856, 1810 change of name from Heimann Joseph Ephraim to Hermann Eberty) and his wife Babette nee. Mosson (1788–1831) born. Felix Eberty's grandfather was the banker Joseph Veitel Ephraim (1730–1786), his great-grandfather was the court factor Veitel Heine Ephraim . Eberty married the landlord's daughter Marie Hasse and was the father of four daughters, including the eldest Maria Carlotta Margarethe Stobbe and the third, the novelist Babette von Bülow (pseudonym Hans Arnold).

Felix grew up in Berlin and attended the Cauer institution . In addition, he received private lessons from the mathematician Jakob Steiner . From 1831 to 1834, he studied in Berlin and Bonn law , his training he graduated in Berlin on City Court and the Superior Court under Court of Appeal President William Henry of Grolman , 1840 Supreme Court was assessor and then judge in Hirschberg , Lubben and Wroclaw , where he 1849, from Resigning from the judicial service, completed his habilitation , read on natural and criminal law and became an associate professor in 1854. After completing his studies, he became a member of the literary association Tunnel über der Spree in Berlin , to which he remained connected throughout his life. He died July 7th, 1884 in Arnsdorf in the Giant Mountains.

Scientific work

While he was still in the judiciary, Eberty published the 28-page book Die Gestirne und die Weltgeschichte in Breslau under the pseudonym FY . Thoughts about space, time and eternity. It was translated into English and appeared in London in the same year - without an author being given. A year later Eberty published an amendment, still as FY, and under the same title with the addition of the second issue . In the foreword he points out that the English edition of the 1st issue is not authorized.

In 1855, in the first edition of his natural science books, Aaron Bernstein presented reflections on space, time and the speed of light, which "an unknown, astute thinker" had made in an anonymous writing. Albert Einstein read these popular science books in his youth, which are considered formative for his interest and his further career.

In 1874 Eberty published a second German edition, this time under his full name. In the meantime, the plant had great success in England and the USA. In the preface to the 1874 edition, Eberty states that the sixth edition in London was already out of print in 1854. W. von Voigts-Rhetz thought this edition was the work of an English-speaking anonymous and translated it into German in 1859.

Albert Einstein wrote a foreword for a new edition of Eberty's work in 1923.

The image scientist Karl Clausberg claims in his book Between the Stars: Photo Archives , published in 2006, that Eberty's writing had an influence on Albert Einstein , Ludwig Klages and Thure von Uexküll as well as on Walter Benjamin . He included Eberty's writing as a facsimile in his book and commented extensively on it.

The Einstein biographer Jürgen Neffe also sees an influence on the young Albert Einstein and writes about Eberty's work: “Here you can also find a decisive thought on the special theory of relativity: the moment travels with light.” The scientific reason for “such fantasies” Einstein then delivered later.
