Félix Mantilla Botella (born September 23, 1974 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish tennis player .

Mantilla became a professional player in 1993 and won ten individual tournaments in the course of his career, including the 2003 Rome Masters . In June 1998 he was in the top 10 for a week.

Career

After taking part in several Challenger tournaments in 1994 and making his ATP Tour debut in Prague , he was in an ATP final for the first time in 1995 in Buenos Aires . He lost to Carlos Moyá in two sets, but was able to end the year for the first time with a place in the top 100 of the world rankings.

In 1996, after moving into the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters , his first tournament victory in Porto and four other finals, he finished 18th in the world rankings.

Mantilla made his big breakthrough in 1997. He won five tournaments on clay and was thus the player with the most tournament wins on clay in 1997. He also won all of his four games at the World Team Cup and was able to achieve overall victory with Spain and achieved one of his greatest successes on hard court with the quarter-finals at the Australian Open . He finished the season in 16th place in the world rankings.

In 1998, after beating Thomas Muster in the quarter-final at the French Open , he made it into a Grand Slam semi -final for the first time, in which, however, he failed due to Carlos Moyá. He won the tournament in Bournemouth and was in the finals of two hard court tournaments. He finished the year in 20th place in the world rankings.

In 1999 he won his first major tournament in Barcelona and also made it to the semifinals of the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Rome .

In 2000 he could not build on his successes in previous years and had to end the season in July due to a back injury. As a result, he fell far behind in the world rankings and ended the year in 99th place.

In 2001, after two tournament victories on the Challenger Tour in Estoril , he made it to the final and celebrated his first ATP tournament victory in 17 months in Palermo at the end of September . He fought his way back into the top 50.

With the exception of the hard court finals in Indianapolis, 2002 did not go very well and he finished the year in 55th place.

The following year he celebrated the greatest success of his career by winning the Italian Open . After this tournament victory, he could no longer reach a final in his career. However, he ended the year in 22nd place.

After disappointing results in 2004 and 2005, Mantilla did not play any more tournaments for the time being due to back problems after the US Open 2005.

At a Challenger tournament in Monza he returned to the international tennis stage in April 2007 and three weeks later he was given his first match at the ATP tournament in a year and a half thanks to a wildcard for the tournament in Barcelona . However, he failed in the second round - as so often with Carlos Moyá. After a few challengers and two ATP tournaments, he finally resigned at the end of 2007.
