Felsőrajk is a Hungarian community in the district Nagykanizsa in Zala county .

location

Felsőrajk is a small settlement between Nagykanizsa , Zalaegerszeg and Keszthely . The village is located in a former marshland that was reclaimed through the construction of the Prinzipal Canal (main canal). Wine is grown on Öreghegy, a hill in the east. The area offers opportunities for hiking. Fishing and wildlife viewing (lynxes). In the neighboring settlement of Pötrétė, 3 km from Felsőrajk, peat is extracted.

history

Felsőrajk and its surroundings were already inhabited before the Hungarian conquest during the Avar period. An Avar cemetery was discovered during excavations.

The name was first mentioned in 1019 in a document from the Zalavár Abbey in the form Rayke . The name goes back to the Hungarian / Slavic Rejk, probably the name of the landlord from the 12th to the 19th century. In the 16th century a castle called Várhely was built here, the ruins of which can still be seen.

La Tène period tomb

In 1958, the grave of a woman who was at excavation for a basement Frühlatène (LTA I, about 450-380 v. Chr.) Destroyed. During an emergency excavation , a torc (chokers), two bronze bracelets, a bronze ankle ring, three bronze fibulae and a clay bowl were recovered. Grave remains with artefacts were also found in the vicinity . These finds are the southernmost spring graves in Hungary. Today they are on display in the permanent collection of the Hungarian National Museum ( Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum ).

Road No. 7527 and No. 7532 meet in Felsőrajk. The station on the southwestern edge of the municipality is connected to the railway line from Szombathely to Nagykanizsa.
