Fenne is the typical pasture of the marshland in North Friesland .

Word origin

fenn is an ancient Germanic name for swamp , moor , low-lying grassland . The Frisian has known it since ancient times as fen (n) e meaning swamp , pastureland , the East Frisian as fenne , fenn low pastureland with boggy subsoil . That is why the term is used in the Dutch- speaking area in the sense of Fenn . The Danish fen denotes a piece of marshland that is enclosed by ditches . The Jutian fenne refers to a meadow enclosed by ditches , a meadow on which grass is mowed .

In North Friesland, High and Low German Fenne as well as North Frisian fairies ( mooring ) primarily refer to the cattle pasture typical of the landscape and secondarily to the meadow .

Characteristics

Land reclamation

As can be seen from the origin of the word, the fens of the marshes is surrounded by ditches used for drainage. It is used as pasture, primarily for cattle. Livestock watering is a Kuhle (Mooring kööl ) called pond .

The bottom profile corresponds to the land reclamation serving salt marshes : between parallel grooves of the bottom is somewhat increased. Some of the structure can also be seen on satellite images in the highest resolution, for example here: ( )

Flora and fauna

In particular, natural ditches are a valuable wetland habitat that is home to reeds , bulrushes and moor frogs, among other things .
