Telecommunication Office (Deutsche Post der GDR)

Following the political organization of the GDR , there was a telecommunications office in each district , which was located in the district town. There were 14 telecommunications offices plus the Berlin telephone office and the government telecommunications office in the eastern part of Berlin . The telecommunications office was officially abbreviated to FMA in the GDR . There were special telecommunications construction offices (FBA) for telecommunications construction, which were usually also located in the district towns and in Berlin.

In the district towns there were post and telecommunications offices (PFA) , each of which was divided into a post department and a telecommunications service department with these subordinate offices and agencies. The office manager was provided by the postal service, his deputy was responsible for the telecommunications area.

An FMA was divided into 6 areas of responsibility:

  • Task area 2 - household
  • Task 3 - Subscriber Services
  • Task area 4 - Telephone service (hand) and telegram service
  • Task area 5 - switching and transmission technology
  • Task area 6 - line technology

The trunk line of a telecommunications office was composed of the head of the office and department heads. The head of the office was responsible for the proper execution of all tasks assigned to the office. The department heads independently managed the service of the departments under them in accordance with the applicable provisions such as ordinances, service instructions and guidelines.
