The aid organizations of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe (JUH) and the Malteser Hilfsdienst (MHD) are responsible for the emergency services in addition to the Magdeburg fire brigade.

The crisis intervention service of the professional fire brigade also includes active emergency pastoral care .

history

In the years 1864 and 1865 there were several major fires in Magdeburg, which caused the city authorities to set up a permanent fire brigade on April 1, 1865 . This came from the night fire station, which had existed since January 1, 1856 and was housed in the colonnade of the old town hall . Even before the professional fire brigade was founded in 1874, this defense station was on standby around the clock. In addition to the permanent fire brigade, there was also the so-called general fire brigade . This consisted of the 5 craft companies in the old town , the special fire brigade corps on the Werder and in Sudenburg as well as the voluntary gymnast fire brigades . In the first few years, the forces were alerted by the tower keepers of St. John's Church using the storm bells . For orientation purposes, a red flag was held out during the day and a red lantern at night to show the emergency services the direction to the fire. In 1867 Sudenburg was incorporated along with its fire brigade.

The professional fire brigade was founded in 1874. In the years that followed, the fire brigade, which was still weak in terms of personnel, continued to deploy the general fire brigade in large fires. After the personnel and technical expansion of the professional fire brigade, the emergency services of the general fire brigade were called to fewer and fewer operations. From 1877, the gymnast fire brigades, which received no compensation for the lost earnings, disbanded. The Werder volunteer fire brigade was dissolved on May 1, 1880.

When the community of Neustadt, now known as Alte Neustadt , was incorporated in 1886, the local fire brigade and the existing technology were incorporated into the municipal fire brigade. Before the incorporation, due to the growing population of Neustadt, considerations were made to set up a professional fire brigade. Due to the upcoming incorporation, however, this was waived. Instead, from April 1, 1886, a guard of the Magdeburg professional fire brigade was set up on Nikolaiplatz. The Buckau volunteer fire brigade dissolved with the incorporation in 1887, which was probably founded on the basis of the Police Ordinance that came into force on May 15, 1880 to regulate fire police and fire extinguishing in the city of Buckau .

The takeover of other fire brigades led to technical problems, as the existing hose systems could not be coupled with one another. Therefore, over time, the various hose systems were replaced by the Polte-Stolz system, developed by the former fire director Stolz of the Magdeburg fire brigade. From 1894 onwards, the city's night watch corps was dissolved. In 1905, the conversion to the Storz coupling system, which is still used today, took place . In the following years, further incorporations followed, Rothensee 1908, Cracau , Prester , Fermersleben , Salbke , Westerhüsen and Lemsdorf all in 1910. The local compulsory and voluntary fire brigades were taken over as local fire brigades and placed under the professional fire brigade. In the first few years, the professional fire brigade was only deployed in these districts when the forces there were insufficient. The volunteer fire brigades in these areas still had to pull their technology to the fire sites by hand and were therefore often exhausted when they arrived at the scene of the fire. Furthermore, it took them longer to get to the scene than the fire brigade, due to their better technology and constant readiness for action. This led to bad morale and, in the end, to the dissolution of the local fire departments. The suburban fire brigades in Fermersleben, Cracau, Prester, Rothensee, Salbke and Westerhüsen still existed until 1924. 1929 only the Prester volunteer fire brigade.

On the basis of the law on fire extinguishing of December 15, 1933, the previously independent Prster volunteer fire brigade became a unit fire brigade under the direct leadership of the city fire director. The fire brigade became a fire engine of the Magdeburg fire brigade and was equipped with new extinguishing technology. It was not until 1959 that the Prester volunteer fire brigade was re-established. From 1933 to 1935, was planning in the area of Ostelbien establish a volunteer fire department, which was never realized.

As of 1950, based on a stipulation by the GDR with interested citizens, the establishment of additional volunteer fire brigades began. In 1952, the then largest village in Germany, Ottersleben , was incorporated as a district southwest. Since the end of the Second World War there has been no volunteer fire brigade in Ottersleben. The tool shed, which was only built in 1936, was used by the Wanzleben district fire department until then and then served as a training command for the Magdeburg professional fire department. The newly founded volunteer fire brigades were equipped with new technology and new tool sheds were built in Southeast 1974, Prester 1976, Diesdorf 1977 and Rothensee 1979. In the 1960s, the first women's groups emerged in the volunteer fire brigades who took on tasks in preventive fire protection, but also worked as managers, machinists and actively involved.

Today the professional fire brigade has two fire stations and one rescue station and the volunteer fire brigade over ten fire stations.

Professional fire brigade

Former central fire station, now the location of the rescue station

The professional fire brigade operates a total of two fire and rescue stations and another rescue station in the city.

Fire station north

The fire station north at Peter-Paul-Strasse 12 Erioll world.svgwas built in 2009 and thus brought together the emergency services of the guards in Neustadt and Mitte. The new construction of the ten million euro building offers space for 30 emergency services per shift (140 in total). The 32 administrative employees are also housed there. The guard's training room is also used as a command room in the event of a disaster. Furthermore, the fire station north has its own fitness room, its own workshop areas for the diving group, chemical protection, the inspection service for handheld fire extinguishers, risers and its own car repairs.

In the Wache Nord there are two fire fighting vehicles, two turntable ladders, a telescopic mast vehicle, a tank fire engine, four emergency control vehicles (including an ELW 3), a water rescue vehicle with a lifeboat and a multi-purpose boat, two swap-body vehicles with five roll-off containers, a decontamination truck, two dangerous goods vehicles, several personnel transport vehicles, an animal rescue vehicle, a workshop vehicle and various other command vehicles, rescue vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles.

Fire station south

The building of the fire station south, built in 2001 on Ottersleber Chaussee Erioll world.svg, is located in the south of Magdeburg in the immediate vicinity of the Magdeburg airfield . This new building was necessary because the focus of operations shifted from the former industrial and residential area of Buckau to the southern city area. In addition, the old guard station in Buckau had some space deficits. A total of around 70 firefighters work in three shifts at the station. It is equipped with its own workshops, standby, training and office rooms, a fitness room, the clothing room for firefighters, paramedics and emergency doctors, the hose workshop, a solar system and a rainwater treatment system. In addition, the central filling station for fire-fighting and disaster control vehicles is located in Magdeburg next to the station.

Two fire fighting group vehicles (one of them as a reserve), a turntable ladder, a tank fire engine, a crew transport vehicle, two swap-body vehicles with various roll-off containers, two logistics vehicles and an ambulance (for overweight patients) are housed in the south guard. Between July 1, 2013 and December 4, 2015, an ambulance from the Malteser Emergency Service was stationed here.

Integrated rescue control center

The integrated rescue control center for the fire brigade, rescue service and disaster control is located in Brandenburger Strasse Erioll world.svg in the inner courtyard of the former fire station in Mitte. A new building was erected there in 1997 for around 4.5 million euros and therefore remained after the fire station in the middle had moved to the fire station in the north on Brandenburger Strasse. The control center schedules over 50,000 missions every year. The number of calls that are accepted is of course significantly higher.
