action

New York City in the present. Underdog Shawn MacArthur, a former wrestler with moral convictions, has kept himself afloat with small businesses since his arrival in the metropolis by selling fake Harry Potter volumes and iPods. The semi-ambitious activities of the loner are hardly enough to pay the rent. In addition, Shawn's situation worsens when he is robbed of his few belongings by black marketeer Harvey Boarden, who controls a street corner with his gang of juvenile offenders - even though the newcomer successfully asserts himself against three youngsters. Shawn later introduces the seedy criminal - an observer and expert on the local scene for illegal fistfighting - in a café. Harvey recognizes Shawn's promising potential and makes him an offer to participate in so-called bare-knuckle fights at parties of well-heeled New Yorkers .

Shawn agrees to the profitable partnership out of sheer financial need. The newcomer wins the first fight in a shabby area, in front of influential personalities. They soon invite him to their club, where he meets the attractive waitress Zulay, to whom he immediately feels attracted. At the same time, Shawn meets his hated companion Evan, an arrogant wrestling champion who was once taught together with him by MacArthur senior, Shawn's father, until there was an uproar; Shawn started a fight with Evan, in which the coach (Shawn's father) intervened and was injured in the tussle by his son, which resulted in Shawn's disqualification.

After two more fights, Shawn soon gains a high reputation as a pugilist. After all, big money beckons - albeit with questionable methods; Shawn is said to lose intentionally in the decisive fourth fight against his "archenemy" Evan in order not to endanger Harvey's previously made betting deposits with borrowed capital. Shawn rejects this, however, as he considers this to be immoral, among other things. Harvey's "linked" sports bets are secretly placed by the attractive Zulay, who has started a love affair with Shawn, but initially withholds it from him. It finally comes to the bitter argument between Shawn and Harvey regarding the "deliberate loss", which the down-to-earth Shawn decides for himself.

After the last big fight it turns out that Zulay and Shawn have bet on the correct winner of the event, namely Shawn, although according to an agreement the winner should have been Evan. Harvey had therefore put all his money on Evan and now lost everything. In the end, however, Shawn hands over the overjoyed Harvey $ 1 million that he won from sports betting. In the last scene Shawn, Harvey, Zulay and their followers leave New York for Chicago and California respectively. (It is not clear in the film where the protagonists are ultimately going).

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the “ambiguous” production “certainly has the potential to become a differentiated action drama” , but “with its made-up plot and poorly drawn supporting actors” does not go beyond the level of relevant B-films.
