The Field Cudweed ( Filago arvensis ) is a plant of the genus Filzkräuter ( Filago ) in the subfamily Asteroideae within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae). It is widespread in Eurasia and North Africa.
description
Filzkraut grows as an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 35 centimeters. The upright stem is branched from the middle to panicles and hairy white and tomentose. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate with a length of 10 to 20 millimeters and a width of 1 to 4 millimeters.
The three to twelve 4 to 5 millimeters long flower heads are not of bracts surmounted. All bracts are blunt, not keeled, covered with wooly tomentose hair up to the tip and spread out in a star shape at the time of fruiting.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
Occurrence
The distribution area of the felt herb extends northward in Europe to Sweden and Finland ; further over North Africa , Western Asia to Central Asia and to the Altai Mountains .
In Central Europe it occurs rarely in the sandy areas east of the Elbe and in those in the low mountain ranges, also at the foot of the Alps and in the lower elevations of the central and southern Alpine valleys. It rises to an altitude of 1000 meters.
Filzkraut thrives best on lime-poor, nutritious , stony, gritty or sandy soils . It colonizes paths, fallow land and fields. Filago arvensis is a character species of the Filagini-Vulpietum from the Thero-Airion association, but also occurs in warmth-loving societies of the Aperion spicae-venti association.
Systematics
The first publication of Filago arvensis was in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Synonyms for Filago arvensis are: Filago lagopus (Stephan ex Willd.) Parl. , Gnaphalium arvense (L.) Willd. , Gnaphalium lagopus Stephan ex Willd. , Logfia arvensis (L.) Holub , Oglifa arvensis (L.) Cass. , Oglifa lagopus (Stephan ex Willd.) Chrtek & Holub . The specific epithet arvensis means "growing in fields".
The feltwort is a type of the subgenus Filago subgen. Oglifa .
