The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Kunigund is located below Gomarn Castle in Bad St. Leonhard . This branch church of the Leonhardikirche was first mentioned in a document in 1591.

Building description

The church is a large, originally Gothic building that was renovated in the baroque style between 1740 and 1750 . The south-west facing church consists of a nave supported on the south side by buttresses and a recessed, polygonal choir. The three-storey tower on the right side of the east facade consists of a Gothic tower ground floor with a profiled pointed arch portal, with a coupled Renaissance window on the bell storey marked in 1588 and a Biedermeier dome. Martin Feltl cast a bell in 1773.

In the four-bay nave, a baroque groin vault rises between girders that rest on stepped wall pillars with combatant cornices . The three-axis, groin vaulted Emporenjoch is open in arcades between wall pillars to the nave. The organ was built by Ferdinand Schwarz in the middle of the 18th century. A fluted, round-arched triumphal arch connects the nave and the single-bay, groin -vaulted choir with a five-eighth end . To the left of the choir is a Gothic sacrament niche with a grille and a tracery tympanum . The relief representations on the side columns symbolize the sacraments: an eagle that nourishes its young with its blood and a lion that breathes life into its young. On the opposite side of the choir, the remains of a Gothic window dressing with two prophet figures from the beginning of the 15th century are walled in. An iron plate door leads into the sacristy .

Facility

The high altar was created in 1864 by Johann Sies. The altarpiece shows St. Sebastian . The figures of St. Joseph , Hieronymus , Rochus and Johannes Nepomuk date from the 18th century.

The two side altars were made in 1692. The left altar consists of an aedicule over a small base with side console figures and is decorated with acanthus on the consoles and the frames and vine leaves on the twisted columns. The altar panel shows the donation of the rosary to Saints Dominic and Catherine , the top picture shows a mercy seat . On the side are the statues of a male saint and an Anna herself, the third . The structure of the right side altar resembles the left one. A crucifixion group is depicted on the altar panel from 1692, and St. Vitus on the top . On the main floor there are the statues of the Holy Imperial Couple Heinrich and Kunigunde , in the top there are those of St. Christopher and the Evangelist Johannes .

A late Gothic carved crucifix from the beginning of the 16th century hangs above the triumphal arch . The stone cast font and the ambo date from the second half of the 20th century. Other furnishings in the church include oil paintings of a Madonna and a Pietà in a rich frame from around 1750 , a Johannes Nepomuk painted in 1755, and console statuettes of God the Father and Saints Andrew , Florian and Martin from around 1700 .
