history

The first written mention was in 1241, the church at that time already had parish rights; it is believed to be one of the mother parishes of the parish church of Freistadt. It is also assumed that the church was founded in the 12th century and is therefore older than the city of Freistadt. At that time, the land belonged to Garsten Abbey . Documents to prove this have been lost. The church has always been used as a baptistery and in the 13th century the dead from Freistadt were buried in the walled cemetery around the church. Only since the middle of the 13th century was the pastor of Freistadt also pastor of St. Peter. Nevertheless, the church formed a large parish and included areas of today's parishes Freistadt, Waldburg, Rainbach and Reichenthal. St. Peter was independent from Freistadt, although it was in the keep of the city.

The Romanesque building with a square choir was destroyed in the Hussite Wars of 1419–1434; the remains were rediscovered during excavations in 1964. At the same time as the Liebfrauenkirche , this church was rebuilt in the 15th century by Mathes Klayndl in the late Gothic style, the exact dates of construction are unknown. The year 1467 is written on the triumphal arch with two crossed keys. After the Thirty Years War , the church received three early Baroque altars as part of the Counter Reformation .

Until 1785 St. Peter was an independent parish church, then the area of responsibility was divided between the parishes of Freistadt, Rainbach , Reichenthal and Waldburg. Since then it has belonged to the parish of Freistadt. The last renovation of the church took place in 1962/64. In 2008 the roof and the steeple were renewed.

The church from the outside

The western portal is late Gothic and has a pointed arch. The entrance door, a wooden gate that dates back to around 1900. The gabled roofs are above the choir hipped and the small tower has a renovated onion dome. Around the church is the walled cemetery, which can be entered from the site through two pointed arched gates.

In addition to its function as the first Freistadt cemetery, 56 Russian prisoners from the Freistadt POW camp were buried there between 1914 and 1916 during the First World War . The small cemetery has always served as a burial place for the people of St. Peter.

Inside the church

The main altar

In the church there are three early baroque altars from the 17th century, which are surrounded by lush, gilded acanthus frames. The main altar shows the denial of Peter, the side altars bear images of the crucifixion and the Assumption of Mary . The tombstones in the church and the baptismal font are reminiscent of the Romanesque period . The ceiling consists of a ribbed vault .

The organ comes from the Freistadt organ builder Lorenz Franz Richter from the last quarter of the 18th century and has twelve tones. A remarkable early Gothic tombstone from around 1300 is also in the church.

Calvary Chapel

The entrance to the chapel

The Kalvarienbergkapelle, All Saints' Chapel or also the Holy Cross Chapel , was donated in 1370 by Hermann the Zinespan from Freetown and is right next to the church. The Zinespan were a city noble family and the chapel was built as a family burial place. After the Zinespan foundation capital was used up, the chapel became a financial burden. Therefore it was profaned under Josef II and converted into a barn.

After a fire in 1834, the chapel was brought back to the public's awareness, renovated and consecrated . In addition, the Way of the Cross with 14 stations from Freistadt to St. Peter was built in 1842 , the chapel became the 12th station. Jesus dies on the cross . The chapel was given its current name through the construction of the Way of the Cross. The Way of the Cross is a natural monument because of its beautiful old tree population ( NDM 517 ). The last renovation of the chapel took place in 1963.

The chapel is a Gothic building from the late 14th century. The chapel is a one-bay building with a ribbed vault. The high altar shows a crucifixion group, created by Franz Xaver Schneider between 1836 and 1842. The Zinespan crypt is no longer accessible today.
