A morality singer gives an introduction to the story that is said to have taken place in a summer house near Neuruppin in 1838 . He begins with the words: “Three sisters went on vacation, you saw the daisies blooming. Three sisters had a servant who served them for many years and yet at the end of his days remained a poor dog. "
As for many years, the servant Rudolf Mossdenger goes to this house with the three Heckendorf sisters in order to be of service to them in many matters. To his surprise, this time he is even supposed to take over the kitchen service, since the appointed cook won't be arriving for two weeks. This, he points out, will be too much work for him, since he has been suffering from a strong cough for the second year and that also in summer. But the determining sister Charlotte does not accept his objections, but stipulates that there should be no special things to eat, only healthy food such as fruit, vegetables and fish. The mention of fish arouses Rudolf's resistance, because he cannot tolerate fish. The remainder of the first day is spent with determinations and wishes from the ladies, for which the servant is given a liqueur to drink as a thank you, which he does not refuse.
After the sisters, who are the main heirs of the Heckendorf breweries, have gone into their rooms, Rudolf enters Clementine's without knocking. Although they have both separated so far, now that they are alone they are suddenly with you. Together they indulge in memories of the beautiful past years and the hours they spent together. But Rudolf quickly gets to the point and reveals to Clementine that he wants to quit because of his poor health in order to travel around the world on a ship for a long time. For this he would like to have the portion of her inheritance that she promised to be paid out so that he can finance this trip. But Clementine makes it clear to him that she cannot give him the money because it is firmly anchored in the brewery's papers. Now Rudolf threatens to tell the other two sisters about the long relationship. This story is repeated with Charlotte and Cäcilie, as the servant was also available to these ladies over the years. Only none of them knew anything about the other relationships and Rudolf wants to make that known, because neither are the other two willing to pay him the promised monies either.
Since Rudolf composed and wrote a song many years ago and only wants to have it done for each sister, they are now puzzled when they discover the next evening that the others also know this song. Slowly the thought arises in each of them to get their servant out of the way and so Charlotte asks Rudolf whether the bottle with the arsenic is still in the little medicine cabinet . When he replies in the negative, he is instructed to bring a new one with him on his next trip to Neuruppin because of the rats in the basement. After this has arrived, the three sisters, independently of one another, will pour the contents of this bottle into the liqueur bottle, which is only intended for Rudolf.
The next day the ladies talked about the fish that Rudolf had prepared excellently and especially praised the idea of putting two pikes on top of each other. The servant who is called accepts the praise and plays a song on the piano that the sisters recognize immediately. It's the waltz that everyone thinks was written just for themselves. Rudolf now reveals the connections and the three are very horrified that he was available to them all. And he goes on in his openness, because he now reveals to them that the inner one of the two fish was already spoiled and they will not survive the day. The sisters reply that the liqueur he has just drunk has been poisoned with arsenic. However, Rudolf had suspected something like that and had previously filled the bottle in the medicine cabinet with powdered sugar. So he took another sip of liqueur to confirm his safety. Then Clementine reported that when she tried to pour the arsenic into the liqueur, the bottle was already empty. But since she had kept the beautiful blue bottle from last year that she was supposed to throw away, she took this poison and poured it into the liquor bottle.
The morality singer sings in his swan song: "Four coffins drove on four wagons, the death bell rings with fear, love didn't go through the stomach here, summer has just begun."

“According to a tried and tested scheme, the plot was provided with an abundance of effective gags; a grateful field of activity for real comedians. And what opened up to us there - looking back to the year 1838 - was full of bizarre ideas and really suitable as a summer punch. The menu, which was easily digestible despite the addition of arsenic, was prepared by Kurt Jung-Alsen. But as before, he was not able to fully exploit the inspiring heights of artistic imagination. "
