The Flößgraben is an 11.0 km long artificial river in the Thuringian district of Gotha , which was created to better supply the arid district town of Gotha with water from the Thuringian Forest .

It is formed by bifurcation of Apfelstädt in Georgenthal and empties into Emleben in the developed also by artificial bifurcation Leinakanal . Since the water of the Apfelstädt flows into the Elbe via Gera , Unstrut and Saale , while that of the Leinakanal flows into the Weser via Nesse , Hörsel and Werra , the ditch overcomes the Elbe-Weser watershed .

The ditch got its name because its water made it possible for the first time to transport firewood (logs) on the Leinakanal system from the Thuringian Forest to Gotha.

Trench course

The Flößgraben begins at the "Georgenthaler Teiler", a so-called "Dreifallwehr". The apple town is divided here by a small island. About 10 m below the division is the first "trap", a lockable gate that regulates the flow of water into the raft ditch or blocks it completely, e.g. B. for repair work. In addition, the Apfelstädt is dammed in such a way that part of the water can flow into the Flössgraben. About 20 m further downstream from the first “trap”, the water of the raft ditch meets two more “traps”. Here, too, the amount of water in the raft ditch can be influenced by draining the water over a small waterfall into the Apple City, which is now about 6 m lower.

The Flößgraben runs for about 50 m parallel to the Apfelstädt and then under the federal highway 88 into the small, then into the large mill pond.

Both ponds were created at the beginning of the 17th century and were used to slow down the tree trunks carried in the canal, to store water for the following mills, to catch the sludge carried along and to fish. The island in the large mill pond consists of B. from the cleaning sludge of the pond, which was created during the cleaning of the pond by French and Russian prisoners of war during the First World War.

The “fishing harvest” must have been quite extensive in the past. So z. B. reports that on February 25, 1727, 488 pounds of carp, 411 pounds of trout and 20 eels went into the net.

Next to the large mill pond there is a bathing establishment built at the end of the 19th century. In order to take the strong current out of the pond and to be able to use the calmer and faster warming water for the swimming pool, part of the water from the raft ditch was diverted around the pond through pipes. The swimming pool was expanded into a modern outdoor pool in 1996/97.

The Flößgrabenwasser used to operate a few mills in Georgenthal and further down the river. However, these have largely expired.

It also runs via Petriroda north of Georgenthal and finally flows in Emleben into the Leinakanal , which has been known as the Kleiner Leinakanal since the rafting ditch was built above the mouth . The water of the Leinakanal still fills the Gothaer Park Ponds and operates the Gothaer Wasserkunst (water features) on the Gothaer Hauptmarkt.
