The winged chickweed ( Spergularia media ) is a species of chickweed ( Spergularia ) within the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
The winged chickweed is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 45 centimeters. The prostrate to ascending stem is richly branched. It has a taproot that allows it to survive the winter. Their thick-fleshed, half-stemmed leaves are linear with a length of up to 4 centimeters. Their lanceolate stipules are provided with a small skin margin.
Generative characteristics
The common chickweed blooms from July to September. The flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold. The greenish sepals are 5 to 6 millimeters long and have a skin edge. The petals are about as long as the calyx, pale pink to purple in color and gradually turning white towards the base. In each flower there are usually ten stamens and three styles.
The 6 to 12 millimeters long ripe capsule fruits are twice as long as the calyx, they jump open with their three flaps and release characteristic seeds that have a wide white wing edge. This feature is the best way to distinguish the chickweed from the other chickweed.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
ecology
The winged chickweed is a short-lived perennial hemicryptophyte .
Occurrence
Their natural distribution is littoral on the coasts of Europe and Western Asia, mostly in the temperate latitudes. In parts of southern Germany, the common chickweed is on the red list (federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia), in North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland it is considered lost.
The common chickweed has its main occurrence on salt marshes and salt plant corridors with changing moisture. It grows best on highly saline silt - or sandy soils .
The winged chickweed is the characteristic species of the plant-sociological order Glauco-Puccinellietalia, it grows in Andel lawns (Association Puccinellion maritimae). It is common with some species of the goosefoot family .
