In the area, under sands of low thickness, clays from the Lower Cretaceous are up to 350 meters thick .

Since then, the natural area of the Tonkuhle has been of great importance as a retreat for endangered animal and plant species.

Former master house of the brickworks

A brickworks for processing the excavated clay was located about 500 meters south of the clay pit on the other side of Hannoversche Strasse just before the Altwarmbüchener See lake that was created in the 1970s . Today the Green Ring runs along the former route for the carts between the clay pit and the brickworks. The brick buildings were almost completely demolished in 1982 and the area occupied with residential development.
