The Floßgraben near Schlema (also known as Schneeberger Floßgraben or Auer Floßgraben ) is a canal built for rafting in the Western Ore Mountains between Albernau and Schlema . It served the wood supply of the Oberschlema mines and smelters as well as the city of Schneeberg . The ditch, which was built in the middle of the 16th century, is considered a masterpiece of the art of marrowing .

history

The trench crosses one after the districts Albernau, Zschorlau , Auerhammer , Aue , Niederschlema and Oberschlema . He was 1556 to 1559 for an exact measurement by the Markscheider Christoph Kunzmann applied is approximately 1 to 1.5 m wide and of little depth. The 15.3 km long ditch at the “Rechenhaus” restaurant in Albernau not far from Bockau is fed by the water of the Zwickauer Mulde . The historic end of the raft ditch is at Zechenplatz in Oberschlema. Since the re-emergence of the Schlema spa, it flows into the Schlemabach at a height difference of 70 m at the end of the Schlemaer Kurpark . The banks of the below listed trench provided are fixed with concrete, quarrystone and brick masonry. The trench was dug for the drift of firewood and pit wood for the Oberschlema mining and the town of Schneeberg.

It runs on the slope of the mountains to the left of the Zwickauer Mulde and crosses the entrance and exit of a later-built railway tunnel and the Zschorlaubach . The fact that the flaked and excavated masses were heaped down the slope created a level surface with a path for the ditch climber and his assistants, who were responsible for the maintenance of the raft ditch. Today a popular hiking trail runs along this ditch, which can be used by experienced and safe cyclists at their own risk.

The Floßgraben is a selected site of the UNESCO World Heritage Ore Mountains Mining Region .
