Florian Sturm (born May 6, 1982 in Wörgl ) is a former Austrian soccer player .
Career
Club career
Sturm began his career, like almost every Tyrolean football talent, at BNZ Tirol before he got a professional contract with FC Tirol through the youth of SV Wörgl . He celebrated two championships in what was then the ultimate in Austrian football, but was unable to establish himself in the first team.
In order to collect match practice, he was awarded in a row for the second half of the 2000/01 season to cooperation partner WSG Wattens in the Red Zac League. After strong performances in this half-year, Tyrol received an offer from the then first division club SW Bregenz , which was accepted.
In Bregenz he finally made the breakthrough, as he was ordered to change position away from the storm to the left flank. This resulted in a significant increase in performance. Sturm completed as a regular player twenty games in which he was able to score five goals. At the end of the season he was voted one of the top 3 newcomers of the year by the daily Kurier .
He was then poached from SK Rapid Wien for the 2002/03 season . At Rapid he played three solid seasons, which were crowned with the championship title in the 2004/05 season. During this time he made a name for himself as a reliable squad player, but he never made the big leap. For this reason, Sturm pushed for a move abroad after winning the championship.
His first international position was SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the second German Bundesliga . The station was extremely unfortunate for him. He could not fight for a regular place and only completed three games. In the winter, they then terminated their contract amicably.
Without a contract, he then signed in his home country with the troubled FC Wacker Innsbruck . In Tyrol people hoped for great things from their prodigal son. But Sturm could not meet expectations. Coming from Germany without any match practice, he found his form difficult and only played six games. He succeeded in scoring.
As a result, they went their separate ways again after only half a year. Due to his poor performance for Wacker, his good name in Austria was almost completely destroyed. As a result, he did not receive an offer from any other Austrian first division club.
For the 2006/07 season he then accepted a contract offer from the Swiss second division club FC Vaduz . In Vaduz he was given a more offensive role again, which he was able to fulfill with success. He became one of the team's achievers, scoring fourteen goals in two years. In the 2007/08 season, Vaduz won the Challenge League championship with Sturm and was promoted to the Axpo Super League for the first time in the club's history . After promotion, Vaduz began to rejuvenate his team, whereupon Sturm, despite his strong performances in the last two years, was not given a new contract.
Without a club again, he received an offer for a trial training session from the new Milton Keynes trainer, the Swiss-Italian Roberto Di Matteo . Sturm accepted and was able to convince. As a result, he advanced to the first player transfer that Di Matteo made. Sturm is currently playing alongside Tore André Flo with the Dons for promotion to the Football League Championship . However, a knee injury suffered in October 2008 forced him to take a break for the whole of November. In January 2009 Sturm was declared without a club after only four short missions.
In May 2009, Sturm signed a one-year contract for the 2009/10 season with an option for another with the Austrian Bundesliga club SV Ried . He spent the 2010/11 season at FC Vaduz in the Challenge League .
National team
Due to his strong performances for Bregenz, Sturm was also called up for the Austrian U21 national soccer team . He played most of his games in qualifying for the U-21 European Football Championship in Germany in 2004 , for which Austria did not, however, qualify.
