The airport handled 318,342 passengers in 2017. It has served as the base for the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air since December 2015 .
Location and transport links
The airport is located about five kilometers southwest of downtown Debrecen and can be reached by road. There is an airport bus to the bus station, downtown and some selected hotels. The bus runs once a day and is coordinated with the arrivals and departures of Wizz Air flights to and from London-Luton and Eindhoven. Driving time to the city center is around 15 minutes.
history
The first official flight movement was in 1930. During the Second World War the airport was a base of the Hungarian Air Force. From March 1944 an air base command of the German Air Force was located here, which supported the flying units of the German Air Force (e.g. parts of Kampfgeschwader 4 ) stationed here from August 1944 . After the Second World War until 1990, the Soviet Air Force was in control of the airport. In 1991 the airport was transferred to the Hungarian state. Then the airport was expanded. Up until 2004 the city of Debrecen invested 3.5 billion Hungarian forints (around 12 million euros) in this. In 2011, the Xanga Group took over 75% of the ownership and took over the operation and further expansion of the airport.
