The Walvis Bay Airport ( German International Walvis Bay Airport , officially Walvis Bay Airport ), formerly Walvis Bay Rooikop Airport , is the airport of the city of Walvis Bay , the second largest passenger capacity airport in Namibia and most important airport on the west coast of the country.
The airport is located on the main C14 road , and its proximity to the seaport has also made Walvis Bay Airport a major cargo hub.
Airlines and connections
Air Namibia and SA Express offer scheduled flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town from Walvis Bay Airport . Air Namibia also flies to the Windhoek airports Eros and Hosea Kutako and to Ondangwa . Air Namibia's connections between Walvis Bay and Ondangwa and Johannesburg were suspended at the end of March 2019. The South African airline Airlink uses Walvis Bay Airport for a technical stopover on the route Johannesburg - St. Helena .
Expansion measures
Since the beginning of 2008, the airport has been expanded to become the country's second international airport. As expansion measures, the extension of the runway was completed and construction of the new Rooikop fire station began on October 16, 2009 and completed on November 7, 2011. In addition, the airport building was renovated and expanded between 2013 and 2016. In total, more than 350 million Namibian dollars were invested.
The expansion of the airport, which was officially completed on July 25, 2016, now also allows intercontinental flights at the airport.
