Edmund Mach (chemist)
Edmund Mach (born June 16, 1846 in Bergamo , Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia , † May 24, 1901 in Vienna ) was an Austrian agricultural chemist and oenologist .
Live and act
Edmund Mach was born in Bergamo as the son of an imperial and royal Austrian military doctor. After graduating from secondary school in Leitmeritz and Prague, he studied at the Polytechnic in Prague and Vienna . After several years as assistant to Johann Oser (1833–1912) at the former kuk Forstakademie Mariabrunn , he trained at the Agricultural Academy Hohenheim on chemical processes in agricultural and forestry soils. In 1870 Mach took on a position as an assistant at the Austrian teaching and research center for viticulture and fruit growing in Klosterneuburg .
In 1874 he was appointed founding director of the agricultural state college of St. Michael an der Etsch , which found its place in the former Augustinian canons of St. Michael. He headed this institute until his appointment as court advisor and agricultural-technical advisor to the Vienna Ministry of Agriculture in 1899.
Under the direction of Edmund Mach, bilingual courses ( German and Italian ) were introduced in the most important areas of regional agriculture in Tyrol : viticulture , fruit growing , cattle breeding and mountain farming . He expanded the agricultural training institute into an experimental and research institute.
Mach is considered an outstanding promoter of the South Tyrolean cooperative system of the 19th century with extensive knowledge in the fields of soil science, fertilization, plant nutrition and agricultural research. Mach's ability to make the most important findings from scientific research usable for agricultural practice led to a constant qualitative improvement in viticulture and fruit growing in South Tyrol and Trentino , which had an impact throughout Austria.
honors and awards
With the reform of the educational institutions in Trentino, the Agricultural Institute of San Michele all'Adige was continued as a foundation from January 1, 2008, under the name Fondazione Edmund Mach .
