Formothione is a chemical compound from the group of thiophosphoric acid esters . Formothion is used as an insecticide and was approved in Germany from 1971 to 1974.

The use of the active ingredient formothion in plant protection products is not permitted in the European Union. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no pesticides are currently approved that contain formothione as an active ingredient.

Extraction and presentation

Formothione can be obtained by reacting chloroacetic acid chloride and N -methylformamide with O , O -dimethyldithiophosphoric acid (DMPA) and ammonium hydroxide.
