Pechstein is a vineyard northwest of the residential area of the Rhineland-Palatinate community of Forst on the Weinstrasse . The vineyards cover 15.7  hectares .

geography

location

The Pechstein is located in the Palatinate growing area and here in the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstrasse area . It is a single site that belongs to the Forster Mariengarten large site and is located entirely within the district of Forst.

terrain

The altitude ranges in east-west direction from about 120  m above sea level. NHN on Landesstraße  516 up to 160  m towards Haardt , which forms the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest on the Rhine plain ; the terrain is 80% flat (to the east) and 20% sloping, rising to the west.

Soil and climate

The soils of the Pechstein consist mainly of sandy loam and are in places interspersed with sandstone rubble , clay and basalt . The climate is mild and the lee of the mountains in the west protects the Pechstein from too much precipitation. The result is that the vines have to take deep roots in order to absorb water and so absorb more minerals that lead to the so-called mineral structure of the wine.

Surname

The Pechstein is counted among the top locations in the Palatinate . The name of the tub was first mentioned in 1836 as "Bechsteinkopf". It is derived from the 355  m high Pechsteinkopf , which lies west of Forst in the Haardt. Basalt was mined on the mountain until the 1980s. Some of the overburden was brought to the nearby vineyards in order to use the heat-storing properties of the dark rock.

In the center of Forst is the Pechstein fountain , next to which a roofed wine tasting stand has been set up.

The vineyard was the inspiration for the electric guitar “ The Pechstein ”, the body of which was soaked in wine for a year in 2016/17, namely a Riesling from the Pechstein vineyard . The guitar was auctioned in 2018 for € 14,000 in favor of the German Children's Cancer Aid Foundation .
