François Charles Garnier (born April 7, 1944 in Beaune ; † August 15, 2018 there ) was Archbishop of Cambrai .

Life

François Garnier studied philosophy and theology in the seminaries in Dijon and Besançon. From 1965 to 1967 he also worked as a teacher in Aleppo, Syria. After his ordination on June 28, 1970, he completed another theological course at the Institut Catholique de Paris . From 1972 to 1977 he worked in pastoral care in Beaune (1972–1977) and Is-sur-Tille (1977–1985). From 1977 to 1990 he was responsible for the lay apostolate at the diocesan level and from 1977 to 1985 as episcopal vicar for pastoral affairs. From 1985 to 1990 he was vicar general.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Luçon on August 31, 1990 . The Archbishop of Lyon , Albert Cardinal Decourtray , donated him episcopal ordination on October 21 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Charles-Auguste-Marie Paty , Bishop of Luçon, and Michel Louis Coloni , Bishop of Dijon . His motto was Immergés dans l'amour .

With the retirement Charles-Auguste-Marie Paty on 25 March 1991, he succeeded as Bishop of Luçon. On December 7, 2000, he was appointed Archbishop of Cambrai by John Paul II.

As a member of the Bishops' Conference of France, he chaired the diocesan associations in France. He was a member of the Commission for the Universal Mission of the Church and a member of the board of directors for economic, social, and legal affairs. On November 8, 2008, he was elected Chairman of the Commission for the Universal Mission of the Church for three years; In 2011 he was re-elected. Garnier has been a member of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and Sacramental Matters since 2014.
