from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions in German-speaking countries after 1945 includes anti-Semitic and anti-Semitically motivated crimes or those which, based on the circumstances , are believed to be related, and also includes attacks on Israeli institutions or on memorials of the Holocaust .

background

Federal Republic of Germany

Since the Federal Criminal Police Office in Germany does not keep separate statistics on the anti-Jewish backgrounds of criminal offenses, reliable data on the complex are difficult to find. In 2001 the Federal Ministry of the Interior introduced new criteria for recording politically motivated crime (PMK), which take into account the “political motivation that triggered the crime” and differentiate between right-wing , left-wing and migration- related perpetrators. In many cases, however, criminal offenses with a political background are not recognized as such and are therefore not included in this section.

The "Independent Expert Group on Antisemitism" of the Federal Government, the American Jewish Committee and the Federal Government's Anti-Semitism Commissioner also criticized in 2017 that anti-Semitic crimes are "always assigned to the PMK law phenomenon" if no further specifics are recognizable or suspects are known. This results in a “possibly distorted to the right” image of the perpetrator. The official figures differ in some cases significantly from those of social groups who state that they systematically record incidents. For example, the Berlin Amadeu Antonio Foundation has been keeping a chronicle of anti-Semitic crimes on the basis of press evaluations since 2002 . All numeric data is used by a large number of unreported cases considered.

In March 2004, the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) presented a study on the growth of anti-Semitism in the European Union . The result related to Germany showed that there was a considerable increase in anti-Semitic acts in 2000. The figures published by the Federal Ministry of the Interior since 2001 were constant until 2009 at the high level of an average of 1690, i.e. four to five anti-Semitic offenses per day. Most of these are propaganda offenses, damage to property, incitement to hatred and violations of the assembly law, including mobbing against Jews, arson attacks on synagogues, desecration of Jewish cemeteries or the destruction of stumbling blocks . With 1,800 registered cases, 2006 is considered to be the year with the most attacks. In 2009, the statistics counted 1690 attacks. In 2010 the number fell to 1268, in 2011 there were 1239 offenses, in 2012 the number rose slightly to 1374 and in 2013 it went back to 1275 offenses. This must be distinguished from the registration of violent anti-Semitic crimes, which were reported with 41 crimes in 2012 and 51 in 2013. According to statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office, the number of registered anti-Semitic crimes rose in the following years as well, in 2018 to 1799, of which 69 were violent offenses, and in 2019 to 2032, of which 62 were violent offenses. The predominant part (93.4% ) was assigned to the right politically motivated crime (PMK right).

In the answers of the Federal Government to regular small inquiries by the parliamentary group of the Left , the anti-Semitic crimes recorded by the police have been published every quarter for several years. For example, in the first half of 2012, subject to the final figures, a total of 436 crimes were reported, including thirteen violent crimes. 425 of these crimes, including eleven violent crimes, are assigned to the right-wing extremist milieu, three to the left-wing extremist and thirteen perpetrators with a migration background, two of which are violent. Eight offenses are listed under other politically motivated crime .

According to the EUMC study, on the one hand, the perpetrators come from the right-wing scene, often they are "young men of white skin who are influenced by right-wing extremist ideas". Another group consists of perpetrators who are often classified as “young Muslims , people of North African descent or immigrants ” and whose motives are clearly related to the Middle East conflict . The German Bundestag's anti-Semitism report from 2011 showed that around 90 percent of all anti-Semitic crimes were committed by perpetrators who belong to the right-wing spectrum. In 2019 this proportion was 93.4%. Other groups of offenders were the left-wing extremism in connection with both an Israel - as a critique of capitalism and the environment of Islamism assigned.

GDR

After the founding of the GDR in October 1949, there were hardly any Jews left in its territory. Nevertheless, there were a number of anti-Semitically motivated criminal and violent acts. The anti-Semitic prejudices were not dealt with after 1945 either. It is true that the newly created state tried to gain legitimation as an anti-fascist state. The denazification took place mainly at the upper management levels. Many fellow travelers and Nazi perpetrators remained in leading positions. Denazification, and with it the examination of the causes of anti-Semitism, was declared over in the early 1950s. The scientist Harry Waibel tries in his work to prove that the SED not only pursued an anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist foreign policy. In addition, the party contributed to the fact that anti-Semitic potential could develop in broad sections of the population. A broad, public and comprehensive social appraisal, for example anti-Semitism in the GDR, did not take place. The exhibition of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation Antisemitism in the GDR - “We didn't have that!” Has been trying to make the topic accessible to a broader public since 2006. The exhibition includes a. a chronology of anti-Semitic crimes and acts of violence in the GDR.

Austria

Anti-Semitic attacks are not registered separately in Austria. According to the EUMC study, physical acts are rare; instead, utterances characterized by “confused and traditionally rooted stereotypes” are widespread in everyday life.

German Switzerland

For German-speaking Switzerland , anti-Semitic incidents are recorded and registered annually by the Swiss Association of Israelite Communities (SIG) and published in comparison with the data collected by the Foundation against Racism and Antisemitism (GRA). The SIG has also been systematically monitoring various websites since 2011; this year, a total of 112 anti-Semitic incidents were reported, 76 of which were statements on the Internet. (In 2010, only five Internet crimes were listed out of a total of 34 incidents.) The remaining 36 attacks in 2011 consisted of nine graffiti, one insult, 15 anti-Semitic letters or emails, five dissemination of anti-Semitic literature and six offenses registered under Miscellaneous. No physical assaults were recorded.

Chronological listing

The following list includes some of the attacks and attacks on Jews and Jewish and Israeli institutions and memorials in German-speaking countries that have received public attention through media discussions.

The large number of anti-Semitic crimes that are registered four to five times a day in Germany are only listed in publicly known and documented cases.
