François Marthaler (born January 6, 1960 in Neuchâtel ) is a Swiss politician , member of the Green Party .

biography

After completing upper secondary school in Biel and then studying architecture at EPFL for a few semesters and economics at Lausanne University , he founded La Bonne combine (a company for “repairs of all kinds”) in 1980 and ran this company until 1991 in 1992, the licentiate in economic policy had received at the "Faculty des hautes Etudes commerciales" Lausanne University, he founded and led BIRD (Bureau d'investigation sur le recyclage et la durabilité). He stayed with the company until 2003.

In 1998 Marthaler was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud . From 2001 to 2003 he was also a member of the local council of his community in Prilly .

On November 30, 2003, he was elected to the State Council of the Canton of Vaud after Philippe Biéler had resigned from his office. From January 1, 2004, François Marthaler headed the Département des infrastructures (building department). He was re-elected in the 2007 cantonal elections. After having presided over the West Swiss Transport Directors' Conference (CTSO) since 2005, he was elected to the Presidium of the Swiss Public Transport Conference (KöV) in 2009.

As a staunch advocate of free software and the joint use of IT solutions between public administrations, he was named the winner of the Swiss OSS Award 2009.

From 2006 to 2012 he was also President of Simap, which operates the platform for the information system on public procurement in Switzerland.

At the end of June 2012 he resigned at the end of his term of office and left the government council. The commissioning of the new station in Prilly-Malley on June 29, 2012 in the middle of the fallow industrial zone of Malley is one of his most important realizations.

In 2013 Marthaler founded the company Why! open computing SA, which sells sustainable computer solutions (in particular thanks to illustrated repair instructions and free software).

He is involved in numerous associations, such as since 2013 as a member of the board of trustees for the IT museum of EPFL Musée Bolo and for the ecological center Albert Schweitzer, as a board member of the EcoParc association and since 2014 also as a board member of the Swiss Open Systems User Group.
