Francis Talbot, 5th Earl of Shrewsbury KG ( 1500 - September 25, 1560 ) was an English peer .

Life

He was the second son of George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury , from his first marriage to Anne Hastings, daughter of William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings . After his older brother Henry Talbot died young, he was his father's apparent marriage .

On February 17, 1533 he was appointed by Writ of Acceleration to the House of Lords and thereby inherited the subordinate title of his father as 11th Baron Talbot prematurely . From 1534 he acted repeatedly as a judge in court cases of the House of Lords against its members. When his father died in 1538, he also inherited his remaining nobility titles as 5th Earl of Shrewsbury , 5th Earl of Waterford , 10th Baron Furnivall and 11th Baron Strange of Blackmere, as well as the state office of Lord High Steward of Ireland . In 1541 he was enfeoffed with the Worksop Priory in Nottinghamshire .

In 1543 he became a member of the Council of the North , a special privy council for northern England . In 1544 he became Lord Lieutenant of Northern England and in 1549 also chairman of the Council of the North. In 1545 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion . 1548 he acted as travel judge ( Chief Justice in Eyre, North of the Trent ). In January 1549 he was admitted to the Privy Council . In 1551 he also held the offices of Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire and Yorkshire and in 1552 he was also keeper of all royal castles in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

In 1553 he was one of the supporters of Queen Jane Gray , who was unable to assert her claim to the throne over Maria I. In 1553 he was enfeoffed with the place Coldharbour near the City of London. In 1557 he became commander in chief of the English troops in Yorkshire, Cumberland , Northumberland , Lancashire , Cheshire , Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Durham .

He died in 1560 and was buried in Sheffield Cathedral.

Marriages and offspring

In November 1523 at the latest he married Hon. Mary Dacre († 1538), daughter of Thomas Dacre, 2nd Baron Dacre (of Gilsland). He had at least three children with her:

At the latest in August 1553 he married Grace Shackerley († 1558), widow of Francis Carless, daughter of Robert Shackerley, lord of Little Langsdon in Derbyshire.
