George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury KG (* 1468 in Shifnal , Shropshire , † July 26, 1538 in Derbyshire ) was an English nobleman .

George Talbot was born in 1468 to John Talbot, 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury . When his father died in 1473, the five-year-old Talbot inherited his title and became the 4th Earl of Shrewsbury. On April 18, 1475 he was beaten to the Knight of the Bath .

At the coronation of Henry VII on October 30, 1485, he was present and was allowed to carry the sword of mercy . He also took on this task at the coronation of Henry VIII on June 24, 1509.

In May 1487 he became captain in the army of Henry VII and fought in the Battle of Stoke on June 16 . On April 27, 1488 he became a Knight of the Order of the Garter . In July 1490 the 4th Earl of Shrewsbury was appointed commander of an 8,000-strong army tasked with helping Francis II , Duke of Brittany , against Charles VIII of France . In October 1492 he accompanied Henry VII to Boulogne-sur-Mer and was present at the signing of the Treaty of Étaples on November 3 of the same year.

After Henry VIII ascended the throne, Talbot became Lord Steward of the Household , Privy Councilor and one of the Chamberlains of the Exchequer . On November 10, 1511, he and the Earl of Surrey were sent as ambassadors to Pope Julius II to negotiate an alliance against France. Seven years later he was sent to Ferdinand of Aragon on a similar mission . In 1520 he was present at Camp du Drap d'Or .

He died in July 1538 at the age of 70 at his Wingfield, Derbyshire estate. His tomb is in Shrewsbury Chapel in Sheffield Cathedral .

family

In 1486 Talbot married Anne Hastings, daughter of William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings . The marriage resulted in 11 children. His eldest son Henry died in childhood, and so his second oldest son Francis Talbot inherited his father's titles.

After the death of his first wife in 1520, he married Elizabeth Walden, the daughter of Sir Richard Walden. He had a daughter with her.
