Club career

Francisco Lombardo began his football career in 1947 with Newell's Old Boys in Rosario , the third largest city in Argentina . After five years with the club, the defender moved to Buenos Aires in 1952 for Boca Juniors . At the club from the working-class district of La Boca , he played with other Argentinian football greats of the time such as Julio Musimessi , who had also moved from Newell's Old Boys to Boca a year before him, Eliseo Mouriño and Antonio Rattín . His first and only Argentine championship with the Boca Juniors won Francisco Lombardo in the 1954 season, when they took first place in the Primera División with four points ahead of CA Independiente from Avellaneda . Francisco Lombardo could not celebrate another title win in his career. In 1960 he left the Boca Juniors and joined the great rival River Plate . In the Nobel Club of Buenos Aires, however, he was only used nine times. After just one year at River Plate, Francisco Lombardo ended his footballing career in 1960 at the age of 35.

National team

Francisco Lombardo was used 37 times in the Argentine national football team between 1952 and 1959 , but he did not succeed in scoring. From national coach Guillermo Stábile he was appointed to the South American squad for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden . In the tournament, which ended for Argentina with the disappointing elimination after the preliminary round as the group bottom in a group with Germany , Northern Ireland and Czechoslovakia , he was used in all games of his team, but could not prevent the early elimination. In addition to the soccer world championship, Francisco Lombardo also played three South American championships. At the Copa América 1955 in Chile and at the tournament of 1959 in Argentina, the Lombardos team emerged as the winner of the tournament, while in 1956 they finished only third behind Uruguay and Chile . In 1957 he was not in the Argentine squad.
