Franjo Kuharić
Cardinal Franjo Kuharić (born April 15, 1919 in Pribić , † March 11, 2002 in Zagreb ) was Archbishop of Zagreb .
Life
He was born as the youngest of thirteen siblings in the village of Gornji Pribić near Krašić . There he grew up as the son of a farmer in the simplest of circumstances. He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1945 by the then Archbishop of Zagreb , Alojzije Stepinac, in the Zagreb Cathedral .
He briefly held the office of chaplain in the Radoboj municipality and was the head of the Rakov Potok and Sveti Martin pod Okićem municipalities. During his tenure there, two assassinations were carried out in 1947 and 1948, but he barely survived them. The then Zagreb Archbishop Franjo Šeper appointed him as pastor in Samobor in autumn 1957 .
On February 15, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Meta and auxiliary bishop in Zagreb . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Franjo Seper on May 3, 1964 co-consecrators were Dragutin Nežić , bishop of Porec i Pula and Josip Lach , auxiliary bishop in Zagreb.
When Šeper was appointed Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1969 , Kuharić was first appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Zagreb and on June 16, 1970 its Archbishop. In September of the same year he became chairman of the Bishops' Conference of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). Pope John Paul II accepted him on February 2, 1983 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Girolamo dei Croati (degli Schiavoni) in the college of cardinals .
On July 5, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted Franjo Kuharić's resignation because of his age.
Franjo Kuharić was an honorary academic at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU).
On March 11, 2012, ten years after his death, the diocesan beatification process began.
