Frank Baum (guitarist)

Frank Baum , also known by his stage name Palani (born March 29, 1936 in Nuremberg ; † September 12, 2018 in Ebermannsdorf ) was a German musician . He became known as a pedal steel guitar player.

life and work

Frank Baum was born in Nuremberg in 1936 and studied music at the municipal conservatory after finishing school. From 1953 he played various steel guitar lap instruments. He then started his musical work with a four-neck Fender String Master and, since 1965, with a pedal steel guitar .

In 1954, inspired by broadcasts on the radio station AFN , he founded the “Mauna Los Hawaiians” and toured the clubs of the European US military bases. In 1966 the Swinging Cowboys came into being with Nipso Brantner .

Since 1975 he has been working as a studio musician with the instruments pedal steel, lap steel , dobro and ukulele and has been able to look back on over 500 LP and CD productions.

With the composer and arranger Willy Ullrich , Baum founded the Kalua Hawaiians in 1963 , a studio band that existed until 1995 and released many LP and CD productions. With his group Country Green , which emerged from the band Train in the 1980s , he won various awards. With Country Green he also became the house musician of the TV series Kilometer 330 with Jonny Hill . Country Green was the most successful country band in Europe at the time. In 1987 Country Green was the first European group to play at the Fan Fair country festival in Nashville , Tennessee (USA). Country Green was also an integral part of the TV sector as the house band for country music programs on ARD , MDR , ZDF and RTL .

At the Aloha Week in Honolulu he was one of the star guests with his interpretations of Hawaiian music. “Palani” is his artist name there.

Baum worked with the following artists, among others: Jonny Hill , Peter Maffay , Gunter Gabriel , Paola , Mary Roos , Rattlesnake Anny , Rosanne Cash , Bellamy Brothers , Spotnicks , Michael Holm , Boxcar Willie , Joe Sun , Freddy Quinn and Dave Dudley .
