Frank Nice

Frank Henry Netter (born April 28, 1906 in New York ; † September 17, 1991 there ) was a doctor and anatomist . He became known worldwide for his anatomical illustrations of the human body and how it works. Because of its very detailed and almost lifelike representations, it is sometimes referred to as the "Michelangelo of Medicine".

Life

Frank Netter was born in New York in 1906 . Drawing and painting were already among his hobbies in Frank Netter's childhood . After training at the National Academy of Design in New York, he worked as a draftsman in the 1920s, including for the Saturday Evening Post and the New York Times . However, he graduated at the urging of his family, a study of medicine at New York University . After completing his studies in 1931, he began drawing medical illustrations to finance the opening of a practice. Two years later he completed his specialist training as a surgeon and set up his own practice. During World War II he served as an officer in the United States Army and illustrated materials for first aid training for soldiers .

His successful career as an illustrator began in 1938 with the CIBA Pharmaceutical Company . After the great success of his drawings with doctors and scientists outside the company, CIBA decided to publish his illustrations as a book. The first edition appeared in 1948 and the drawings have since been republished many times as anatomical atlases in various compilations. They include representations of human anatomy , embryology , physiology, and pathology . He also illustrated important medical breakthroughs such as open heart surgery , organ transplants and the transplant of the first artificial heart . The almost 4,000 drawings he made during his 45 years of professional activity are now summarized in a 13-volume collection entitled “The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations”, which is also available in German , Italian , Spanish , Portuguese and Japanese and is available worldwide in a total circulation of over three million was sold.

Frank Netter saw his "Atlas of Human Anatomy" published in 1989 as his most important work. For his work he has received honorary doctorates from several universities as well as various awards from professional associations and professional associations. He was also an honorary member of the North American Radiological Society and the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.

Frank Netter died of heart failure in September 1991 . He was married for the rest of his life and had two sons, a stepson and two daughters with his wife.
