Frans Van Dyck

Frans Van Dyck (born October 31, 1923 in Edegem near Antwerp ; † March 17, 2018 in Heverlee ) was a Belgian jazz and entertainment musician ( trombone , composition , arrangement ) who also worked under the pseudonym Frankie Dake .

Act

Van Dyck received training in solfège in the local brass band through his father, who was an amateur musician, in order to then play alto horn and flugelhorn . With the support of the local music society, he received lessons at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp. In 1943 he graduated there as a prizewinner on the trombone. A short time later he was already playing in the orchestras of Harry Bart and Willy Rockin.

As an entertainment musician, he toured Belgium and the Netherlands from 1945, where he also played for the Canadian Army. In the field of jazz he worked with American musicians such as Nat Peck and Jay Cameron and with Belgian musicians such as Christian Kellens , Jean Warland , Bobby Jaspar and Jack Sels with his large be-bop orchestra, but also with Fud Candrix and Ernst van't Hoff .

From 1952 Van Dyck was a member of the Henri Segers orchestra ; In 1955 he moved to the Francis Bay amusement orchestra , with which he won the Golden Gondola in Venice. Later he was part of the BRT Festival Orchestra under the direction of Fernand Terby and then to the BRT Jazz Festival under the direction of Etienne Verschueren . He also worked with Jiggs Whigham , Slide Hampton , Frank Rosolino , Kurt Edelhagen , Johnny Dover , Caravelli, Theo Mertens, Eddy House , Freddy Sunder and Gery Liekens. Under the pseudonym Frankie Dake , the album Roger Meets Frankie was released in 1972 with accordionist Roger Eggermont. He can also be heard on albums with Herman van Veen , Jack van Poll , Hazy Osterwald and Fats Sadi . As an arranger, he wrote for fanfare , harmony and wind orchestra, but also for James Last's orchestra .

In 2006 Van Dyck's biography Floere Franske was published , written by his granddaughter Nathalie Villanueva and his daughter Monique Van Dyck. As a musician he was active in the Koninklijke Fanfare Sint-Cecilia in Zellik until shortly before his death .
