With 220 points he achieved the highest number of points of all participants and thus became Olympic champion ahead of Alfred Schmidt and Eugène Ryther . Two years later he set a new world record in pushing in his weight class . During the preparations for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, he fell ill with influenza and did not recover. He died in early November 1923.
