Life

Frans De Haes came from a working-class family from Antwerp who fled to the neutral Netherlands in 1914 during the German occupation of Belgium during the First World War . It was there that De Haes began lifting weights. After the war he returned to Antwerp, where he took part in the Olympic Games in featherweight (up to 60 kg) in 1920 . With 220 points he achieved the highest number of points of all participants and thus became Olympic champion ahead of Alfred Schmidt and Eugène Ryther . Two years later he set a new world record in pushing in his weight class . During the preparations for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, he fell ill with influenza and did not recover. He died in early November 1923.
