Frans van Busleyden (French: François de Busleyden ) (also Buslidius , Busleiden ) (* around 1455 in Arlon ; † 22 August 1502 in Toledo ) was Archbishop of Besançon and a leading Burgundian politician at the time of Philip the Fair .

Life

Frans van Busleyden came from an important family in the Burgundian Netherlands , which had its origins in the Luxembourg town of Bauschleiden . He was the second son of Gilles van Busleyden and a brother of Jeroen van Busleyden . From 1482 he studied in Leuven . For further studies he traveled to Italy and possibly attended the University of Pavia . He completed his studies as a doctor of canon law in 1484/85.

As early as 1483 he became canon in Liège and was provost there in 1485. After his return Maximilian I appointed him tutor to Philip the Fair. He took care of its humanistic education . He later became councilor and in 1490 chancellor of Philip the Fair. In the same year he became provost in Bruges. After the death of his parents, he took over the upbringing of his brothers. After all, he was head of the Dutch Council.

Politically, along with Guillaume II. De Croÿ, he had a great influence on the politics of Philip the Fair. He contributed to the fact that Burgundy was only loosely connected to the other Habsburg lands. At the same time he tried to maintain good relations with France for economic reasons. He was something like the leader of the French court party. His policy was at times in conflict with the war policy of Maximilian I. Even under his influence, Philip stuck to the course of a Franco-Burgundian alliance and thus stood in contrast to his father and father-in-law Ferdinand of Spain . But there were also opposing forces. All attempts to disempower Busleyden as an exponent of a policy friendly to France failed because of Philip the Handsome.

In 1498 he became Archbishop of Besançon and Dean of Antwerp . He was also a canon in Cambrai and Brussels. Antoine I. de Lalaing reported that the King of France had given him the diocese of Pons and a good abbey. He then received two archdeaconates from the King of England and the King of Spain gave him the diocese of Coria . In addition, shortly before the death of Busleyden, Philip is said to have tried to get the Pope's cardinal rank for his confidante.

In 1500, Philipp Busleyden sent Busleyden to Spain to clarify the question of the Spanish succession and to negotiate wedding plans for the future Charles V with a French princess. He accompanied Philip the Beautiful to Spain in 1501. In Blois Philip met with Louis XII. together. Although the emperor did not trust his son to have diplomatic skills and was suspicious of the attitude of his chancellor, he allowed negotiations to take place to make the peace treaty of Trent more concrete . The negotiations were mainly conducted by Busleyden. This came far to meet the French king.

He died in Toledo. He was buried there too. His heart was buried in Besançon.
