He was married to the painter Marie Urbanová-Zahradnická (1868–1945) from Prague, the couple had two sons, Ivo (* June 7, 1899) and Cyrill (* June 27, 1901) and a daughter Marie (* September 8, 1899) 1902).
Training and work
After training as a porcelain painter in a factory, he studied in the studio of František Ženíšek (1849-1916) at the Prague School of Applied Arts ( Uměleckoprůmyslová škola ), today's Academy of Art, Architecture and Design Prague . After graduating, he worked with the painter Jan Dědina (1870–1955).
His main work consists of large-scale building decorations, especially in churches, some of which he designed together with his wife Marie, who made a name for herself primarily as a flower painter. He also created fairy tale illustrations and commercial graphics ; For example, he designed the Austrian one hundred kroner banknote, posters, shares and certificates. In their technical execution, his works are reminiscent of such Alfons Muchas (1860–1939), but their thematic description shows a lower degree of abstraction. Many of his works came in 1921 through the mediation of the Bishop of Königgrätz ( Hradec Králové ) Josef Doubrava (1852–1921) to the gallery of modern arts in this city.
