Henry Crew (born June 4, 1859 in Richmond , Ohio , † February 17, 1953 in Evanston , Illinois ) was an American astrophysicist who has made a contribution to the teaching of physics .

Live and act

Crew came from a Quaker family , his father was a general store . Henry Crew studied Latin, Greek, mathematics and natural sciences at Princeton University from 1878 and received a bachelor's degree here in 1882 . After studying for a graduate degree in Princeton and a stay abroad with Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Robert Kirchhoff at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , Crew obtained a Ph.D. in 1887 from Henry Augustus Rowland at the Johns Hopkins University. in physics.

After brief professional positions as a research assistant at Johns Hopkins University, lecturer (instructor) at Haverford College and astronomer at the Lick Observatory of the University of California , Crew received a professorship at Northwestern University in 1892 , where he remained until his retirement in 1933. From 1930, however, he was released to prepare the Science Hall for the 1933/34 World Exhibition in Chicago ( A Century of Progress ) . After that, crew mainly dealt with the history of science . He was an Associate Editor of the Astrophysical Journal for many years .

In 1904 Crew was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , 1909 a member of the National Academy of Sciences , 1913 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1921 the American Philosophical Society . 1909/1910 Crew was President of the American Physical Society , 1912/1913 President of the Illinois Academy of Science , 1914 Vice President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1941 he received the Oersted Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers . Crew was knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy . He held honorary doctorates from the following universities: University of Michigan (1914), Princeton University (1922), Northwestern University (1937).

Henry Crew had been married to Helen Coale Crew (1866–1941) since 1890, and the couple had three children. Henry Crew's grave is in Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington , Ohio .
