Franz Anton Ermeltraut

Franz Anton Ermeltraut (* 17th October 1717 in Heidelberg , † 21st May 1767 in Wuerzburg , in some sources also Franz Anton Ermentraut ) was a German painter of the Baroque and Hofmalerei -Inspektor at Prince Bishop's court in Würzburg.

Life

Franz Anton Ermeltraut came from Heidelberg and initially worked in the Electoral Palatinate region at the beginning of his career as a painter. Ermeltraut is traceable in Würzburg around 1747. Around 1748 he painted the ceiling frescoes in the Dominican Church (today the Augustinian Church) . In 1749 he portrayed Prince-Bishop Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads based on French models. He then left Würzburg and worked in Schwetzingen from 1753 to 1755 , where he painted a dining room in Schwetzingen Castle in 1754 . In 1756/57 he was involved in the rococo renovation of the Jesuit church St. Michael in Freiburg in Üechtland (Switzerland). Under the direction of the court architect Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti , he designed the ceilings of the choir and the nave.

After his return to Würzburg he was appointed court painting inspector by Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim in 1759 as the successor to Georg Anton Urlaub . Following a decree from the 1760s, he also led the offices of a Kabinetsinspektors and titular Cammerdieners , for which he received an annual salary of 100 guilders.

In 1765/66 he created grisaille- style wall and ceiling paintings in the southern garden pavilion of the court garden in Veitshöchheim Palace . During these years, Ermeltraut also designed the vestibule of the Würzburg Residence with classical grisaille paintings on the ceiling stucco by Lodovico Bossi and with other ceiling paintings. In 1767 he died in Würzburg at the age of 49.

Works (selection)

With his paintings, stucco paintings and frescoes , Ermeltraut mainly created sacred works of art , portraits and works with mythical themes. Two different signatures are known from him. In 1749 he signed a painting with "FErmeltraut" ( ligated ) and he gave his paintings in the Jesuit Church in Freiburg with the abbreviation "F AE", with a sign similar to the "4".
