Franz Brei

Franz Brei (born September 7, 1968 in Bludenz , Vorarlberg ) is a Roman Catholic priest from the Eisenstadt diocese who was employed in pastoral care in Styria until 2013 . At the same time he became known as a singer of religious folk music .

Life

After the theological training at the Benedict XVI. In Heiligenkreuz he received the deacons on July 8, 2000 - and on December 8, 2000 in the Church of St. Martin zu Eschen (Liechtenstein) he was ordained a priest and was incardinated in the clergy of the Archdiocese of Vaduz . He celebrated his home prime on December 10, 2000 in the parish church of St. Pankratius u. Zeno, Feldkirch-Altenstadt . From 2000 to 2003 Brei was a chaplain in Triesenberg (FL), after which he initially worked as a chaplain in Bad Aussee - Altaussee - Grundlsee . He then worked as a provisional for the Styrian parish association Hatzendorf - Breitenfeld - Unterlamm . He was withdrawn from there at the end of November 2013 at his own request.

Franz Brei has been pastor in the Dean's Office Deutschkreutz (Burgenland) in the parish of Neckenmarkt (Burgenland) since April 1, 2014 and in the Deutschkreutz-Neckenmarkt parish association since September 1, 2014. On September 1, 2018, he was incardinated in the Diocese of Eisenstadt and is currently the responsible district dean of the entire Central Burgenland through appointment by the diocesan bishop.

activity

The establishment of a "Lourdes grotto" in Deutschkreutz can be traced back to his initiative , a scaled-down replica of the apparition grotto in the pilgrimage site of Lourdes , which is furnished with a reliquary of Bernadette Soubirous . His special closeness to the people is evident not only in numerous voluntary activities, for example as a fire brigade curate, but also in his efforts to visit people in their respective places in life and to share their concerns without being missionary. He is also particularly concerned about the elderly and sick, for whom he organizes monthly public sick blessings. The reason for his departure from Styria at the end of 2013 were disagreements in connection with the use of a new bells in Unterlamm , financed by sponsors that Brei had won .

Grand Prix of Folk Music 2009

Together with the folk musician Amalia Pfundner, the folk music group Die Raabtal-Dirndln and the Unterlamm church choir, he recorded a CD of folk-spiritual music in 2007. Walter Wessely was the producer of this CD . With a composition by Walter Wessely and Herbert Hirschler , Brei won the Austrian preliminary round of the Grand Prix of Folk Music 2009 by a large margin and came third in the final round of this competition as the best Austrian contribution.

Musical career after the Grand Prix

After his participation in the Grand Prix, the CD Lebenslieder was released in 2009 . In 2010 the CD Faith, Hope and Love followed . Also in 2010, the Graz publishing house Styria published the book "Franz Brei. The singing pastor", edited by the freelance journalist Eric Sebach. The work is based on interviews that the editor conducted with Pastor Brei and was reviewed and authorized by him. At the end of 2013 the CD The Most Beautiful Marienlieder was released . The eight CDs that Pastor Brei is responsible for have now been awarded gold or platinum.

Discussion and appreciation

While Pastor Brei's initiatives represent an important tourist impetus for the Hatzendorf-Breitenfeld-Unterlamm region, the pastor's musical commitment is perceived differently by the church. In addition to the majority of the parish population, who support and approve of his activities, there are also critical voices who criticize the fact that participation in a "Grand Prix of Folk Music" cannot be reconciled with the dignity of a priest. Defenders of the singing pastor counter that the songs interpreted by Brei in no way contradict the teaching or discipline of the Catholic Church; In addition, it has always been a concern of Christianity and the Church to promote the respective folk culture in its religious potential. In any case, Brei emphasizes that his public activities should be understood as a testimony of faith and as "making the church visible in unusual places"; his priestly duties were not neglected. He made his decision to leave the pastoral ministry in Styria after the fact that, despite numerous mediation efforts by the political authorities and the competent church superiors, including diocesan bishop Dr. Egon Kapellari was unable to resolve a conflict about the frequency and duration of the liturgical bells in Unterlamm. The accusation of insufficient criticism, which is raised because of this, is countered by the fact that Pastor Brei wanted to avoid a further escalation of this conflict by giving way.
