Franz Emmerich Kaspar Waldbott von Bassenheim (* 1626 in Lahnstein ; † July 11, 1683 in Speyer ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Worms from 1679 to 1683 .

Live and act

Franz Emmerich Kaspar came from the old noble family of Waldbott von Bassenheim . His father Damian Waldbott of Bassenheim served as Kurtrier bailiff in Lahnstein, the mother's name was Maria Elisa dog Saulheim and was the niece of fürstbischöflich speyerischen upper bailiff Johann Christoph dog Saulheim († 1624).

The young aristocrat opted for the clerical status. In 1637 he was sworn up as cathedral chapter in Mainz and on May 15, 1679 advanced to the position of custodian of the Mainz cathedral . In addition, he held a canon at the St. Viktor monastery in front of Mainz (which at that time was already located at St. Johannis in the city); in Speyer he was cathedral scholar , in Worms cathedral provost .

On November 10, 1679, the Worms cathedral chapter elected its provost Franz Emmerich Kaspar Waldbott von Bassenheim as the new bishop. On June 26, 1681, Pope Innocent XI confirmed . the vote.

Little is known about his office as pastor of the Diocese of Worms , especially since the episcopate only lasted 3 ½ years and he was not ordained a bishop during this time.

Johann Ludwig von Groote wrote about him in his General Church History in 1791 (Volume 32, Page 125): “His sublime virtues, Christian piety, and his edifying way of life made him a church prelate who happily pastured his flock even in very difficult times. But his government was short-lived. "

Franz Emmerich Kaspar died in 1683 while staying in Speyer. His body was transferred to Worms Cathedral and buried there in the bishop's crypt under the east choir. The grave was looted by the French in 1689.

Family environment

Anton Waldbott von Bassenheim, the uncle of Bishop Franz Emmerich Kaspar (brother of his father), worked as choir bishop in the Archdiocese of Trier .

Casimir Ferdinand Adolph Waldbott von Bassenheim (1642 to November 6, 1729) was the nephew of Bishop Franz Emmerich Kaspar (son of his only brother Johann Lothar). He was also the choir bishop in Trier and the cathedral scholaster in Mainz and brought the famous relief of the Bassenheim rider to Bassenheim , which comes from the rood screen of the Mainz cathedral that was torn down in 1683 . It can be assumed that he received the work of art through the mediation of his uncle, the cathedral curator .
